New Class at Dharma Studios

I’m excited to start teaching a Guided Ashtanga Half Primary every Tuesday from 12:15–13:30 at Dharma Studios!

In this class, we’ll explore the traditional Ashtanga Half Primary Series in a supportive, steady-paced guided format. We link breath with movement, build heat, and work with alignment, strength, and focus.
It’s a practice designed to improve mobility and create a grounded, meditation in movement. Perfect for those with some familiarity with Ashtanga or yoga who want consistency, clarity, and a powerful moving meditation.

We’re off to Mexico again. At the start of January we will host our annual yoga and meditation retreat in the jungle of south-east Mexico.

This retreat is a little different. The ashram is alive with a warm, shared spirit: volunteers, teachers, and participants all practicing, chanting, and taking part in ceremonies together. It feels less like an individual experience and more like a joyful community gathering, where everyone is part of the retreat.

Alongside daily Ashtanga yoga, meditation, pranayama, and kirtan, we’ll share in transformative local traditions such as Temazcal (sweat lodge) and cacao offerings, guided by native facilitators. These ceremonies, together with the practice, create a space that is both grounding and expansive.

The land itself holds a certain magic, a place where transformation happens naturally through nature, practice, and community.

Whether you are beginning your journey or have been practicing for years, you are welcome. This is a chance to start the year with intention, connection, and a deep breath of fresh jungle.

You will be guided by two experienced teachers in Ashtanga Yoga, Jivamukti and Mindfulness.

Mexico Retreat Update

This winter I’ll be returning to one of my favorite places: an ashram in the Mayan lands of Mexico. A place that always feels like home, where nature, community, and practice come together in the most transformative way.

This time I’m very happy to be sharing the retreat with my dear friend Sandra Gerhard, a certified Jivamukti teacher and dedicated Ashtanga practitioner. Together we’ll be holding space in this magical place.

With Sandra joining, our program expands to include kirtan, pranayama, and chanting, alongside our daily asana and meditation practice. And beyond our offerings, the retreat will be enriched by local ceremonies such as temazcal and cacao rituals, powerful heart-opening experiences guided by local facilitators and the lovely and joyful ashram family.

Before being a yoga teacher I worked for nine years as a sports TV camera woman and post-producer for a Mexican sports presenter. I traveled around the world with this project that brought me close to some of the best athletes in the world. Football players, basketball teams, World Cups, Super Bowls, Olympics and so. I saw very intimately the intense pressure elite athletes are under. The intense pressure they have on their minds. That period was an incredible experience for me and I loved the travel. But being a camera woman in that environment wasn’t my true calling.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to teach the German Olympic team of breakdance and it was so much fun and very interesting. It awoke something in me that connected me to that past. And it made me excited to have the possibility of teaching mindfulness to elite athletes as I could see how much benefit they can receive from the practice.

By synchronicity since then I watched the film Peaceful Warrior about a college gymnast training for Olympic trials. He meets a mindfulness wizard at his local gas station and he is trained by him to be present amongst the challenges of his life and training. It’s a funny film for anyone interested in mindfulness and based on a true story.

I would love more opportunities to teach mindfulness and yoga to athletes.

Ashtanga and Mindfulness Retreat in Wendland Germany.

Another year for Wendland Retreat. Join us for an Ashtanga & Mindfulness retreat where you will have the chance to practice in an ideal environment to slow down connecting with nature.
Each morning we will open the day with Pranayama followed by Ashtanga Yoga Mysore-Style practice and in the afternoon we will dedicate ourselves to meditation, and mindfulness talks.
The retreat takes place in the beautiful Wendland region, which is one of the most beautiful regions in the north of Germany between Berlin and Hamburg. The area has a very special vibe, landscape, and architecture which is quite different from the rest of Germany. The retreat center Seminarhof Drawehn in Clenze is a uniquely beautiful place, with traditional half-timbered houses, and circular Shala surrounded by trees and plants, and a beautiful garden where you can relax. In the nearby area, you can go for a walk in the forest or cycle to one of the two local lakes.

The course is designed for people who haven’t had any experience with Ashtanga Yoga or who are just starting. You will be introduced in detail to the foundations of the practice where you will be guided step by step through the first part of the Primary Series preparing you for the Mysore classes.

This is a mental and physical practice that will cultivate well-being in your life. As well it will also encourage structure and regular space for yourself. This is a movement meditation practice that will give you focus and concentration and it will nourish your nervous system.

Sunday 30.3 Mysore practice

Ashtanga Yoga Berlin - Barbara Macias

I’m teaching Ashtanga Yoga Mysore style in Yoga School Berlin located in the border of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. In 2008 after visiting Mysore i established myself in Berlin and started teaching in Yoga School since 2010.

Ashtanga Yoga taught in the traditional Mysore style is an individual practice in a group setting for all levels. The teacher is there to assist and introduce students to the basic principles of the practice step by step, as well as to guide the more advance.

The practice takes place in the mornings and the lesson are “open”, which means that students can come whenever it suits them best, and they may leave when they wish, bearing in mind the amount of time needed to conclude the practice. Beginners will usually require between 30 to 45min.

The class schedule: Monday to Friday 7 - 10 / Sundays 10 -12. Full moon and New moon no classes!
