Men speak their own language. My experience in years of working with men in psychotherapy and counseling is that we need to start to learn that language. Many therapies are working only with words, and this is a pity.
What many men have to say, many times is expressed without words.
And this is beautiful.
Instead of telling men that they should learn to speak, and how to speak, we can learn how to listen to the language of men.

Men can be very emotional.
It is a prejudice that men do not feel or show their feelings.
Every sports game, every car race, every political debate contradicts the idea of men without feelings.
During games, races, and debates, men are crying, laughing, shouting, and weeping.
Men are very emotional––
when the space is safe.

Every sports game, car race, and debate has clear rules. When a player is tackled, the referee calls foul,
when a car is run by the wrong class of engine, it cannot start,
when a lawmaker is voted out of parliament, this person cannot make laws anymore.

Clear rules. Clear fields.
Clear boundaries.

When it comes to feelings, for many men the rules are not clear.

When is the right time for feelings? What words are understood? What are feelings good for, anyway?

The rules are not clear, yet many times they are in the space at home and at work, sometimes fueled by psychotherapists and coaches, with lots of rights and wrongs.

"Speak up at dinner. Stay silent at work.“

So, many men choose to stay emotionally silent most of the time.

There will be another game on TV, another debate on social media. This will provide a safe space to be emotional.

Yet the price many men have to pay is that they do not allow themselves to feel what is important to them.

Because this is what feelings are good for: To know what you want and to know what you DON’T want.

This is how you find out what is important to you.

Many men do not know that this is possible: There is a field to find out what is important to you; in a relational field.

It is a game that is fun to play, in a team with other men, and with clear rules.
It provides the safety and expertise to find out and care for what is important to YOU.

It is a real game
of a man’s heart.
It is about your own game, not anybody else's.

To be a man is not a given.�
It never was.
�In former times, being a man appeared to be steady and clear as the societies were organized in a structure that put men, and women, into a rigid order.

Once in a lifetime, an initiation was designed to make the boy a man, a hero’s journey.
�Yet in the fast-changing time of the 21st century, the social structure opens wide and shows a thousand faces each moment, and a man needs an initiation into being with them not just once in a lifetime. He will need to have initiations from moment to moment.
�This specific need of our times asks men for initiations into relationships, with themselves and with the world.

So what does the Hero’s Journey look like for a 21st-century man?
�I hear that question unspoken from men again and again when they come for a session with me.
�I hear it from the young man who longs for a partnership and feels he is not good enough for it.�I hear it from a 60-year-old man who feels sad because his uncle was in the war and he feels the violence from then.�I hear it from a 40-year-old man who wants to find his vocation while working in a simple office job.
�All these beautiful men have diverse topics, yet one single theme connects them: they struggle to find out how to be a man in the world because they have the idea they need to find out alone.

Yet a priceless treasure is waiting for them: The Birth Of Man.

This is a call for men.
What is life about, for YOU?

Actually, we have two steps here:

sharing, laughing together, exploring needs and doubts together, advancing together,
shows his maturity.
With other men, a man finds himself,
and this makes him strong in his intimate relationship, in his job,
and on the next step he needs to take.

How can we even begin to work with the soul to resolve trauma induced by atrocities––and prevent war from happening again? In a beautiful conversation with hosts Lio from Israel and Seth from the US, we unpacked the dynamics of in light of the atrocities in Israel on Oct. 7th, 2023. In the work with perpetrators and victims, I was invited to include my own background as a descendant of my grandfather Rudolf who supported the N***s, and how this supported me to find my path as a systemic Gestalt Therapist working with trauma. If we do not take care of it, it is passed on through the generations. So how to start with allowing it to resolve? I suggest beginning with the key that each of us holds in one's very own hand––the key to opening to true connection that is hidden for many; healthy boundaries.
