Transitioning from one school year to another can be stressful for children. Taking the time to prepare them for the changes can make a big difference.

Things that can help:
Visiting the new classroom and meeting the new teacher
Video tours of the new learning environment
Photo books of the classroom and staff
Social Stories
Practising what to do if there's a problem
A Personal Passport with key info for the teacher
Providing opportunities for the child to ask questions
Listening to the child's concerns and taking them seriously

Summary of the Response from the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) to the Department for Education Consultation on Revised Behaviour in Schools Guidance

• There is a strong association between speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and behaviour, which is recognised in both government policy and academic research

• The RCSLT is concerned that the draft Behaviour in Schools guidance includes no mention of SLCN; this is particularly concerning given that SLCN often go unidentified and unsupported in pupils with behavioural problems

• The guidance does not mention supporting language and communication as a proactive approach to improving behaviour, or early intervention to identify and support SLCN as a preventative approach

• Without addressing these issues, the guidance will not be successful in achieving its aims of supporting schools to improve behaviour and supporting all pupils to meet high expectations of behaviour
• We make a number of specific recommendations for amendments to the guidance which could help it to deliver on its ambitions

repeat back correctly the words they say
slowing down your own speech slightly
asking them to show you (if they can)
not asking your child to repeat the words after you

Top Tips for Speech Development!

(From AFASIC)

By the time a child starts school, most of their words are usually clear to others. However many children struggle with talking and may continue to find it difficult to say:

 Specific or more complex sounds
 More complex sound combinations
 Longer words with lots of syllables

Identifying a child’s speech needs as early as possible is important as persisting unclear speech may affect social confidence and the sound awareness required for the development of reading and spelling skills.

If you are concerned about your child’s speech, seek advice from a qualified Speech and Language Therapist.
