Photons in Magnetic Fields - Future of Cancer Therapy.
On July 3, 2020, the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology (OncoRay) in Dresden received a grant notification for the purchase of an MR linear accelerator. With its help, the photon irradiation should become more precise and effective.
The Medical Faculty of the TU Dresden received an funding notice of around nine million euros last Friday. The handover took place during a visit to the National Center for Radiation Research in Oncology - OncoRay by the Saxon State Minister for Science, Sebastian Gemkow. The research funds consist of funds from the Free State and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
For the first time, the MR-Linac combines particle accelerator and magnetic resonance tomography in one device. After Tübingen, Heidelberg and Munich, Dresden is now the fourth location in Germany and the first in East Germany where the new therapy method will be possible.
The MR linear accelerator will find its new home in the building of the National Center for Tumor Diseases Dresden (NCT / UCC). The structural conditions were created there, so it is planned to start treatments in the second half of 2021.
