My name is Omar Ceesay, and this is my story.
I was raised by my father, a man deeply devoted to religious education. He was widely respected in Tanji for regularly inviting Quranic teachers to our home to teach children from the neighborhood. Through his dedication to Islam and community service, I grew up surrounded by discipline, faith, and strong moral values. During those years, I made many friends within Tanji and nearby communities.
Although my father valued education, he was more passionate about religious learning than Western education. This was because, in our society, many young people who pursued modern education often drifted away from good morals, neglected their responsibilities, and failed to respect their parents and communities. Because of this belief, convincing him to allow me to pursue Western education was not easy.
At that crucial moment in my life, I sought the support of his brother, Ba Sambou may Allah grant him Jannah. He became the bridge between my dreams and my father’s concerns. Through many discussions and heartfelt persuasion, he convinced my father to allow him to take responsibility for my educational journey.
With their blessings and prayers, I was finally enrolled in Tanji Primary School, even though I was above the normal enrollment age. Through various assessments and examinations, I was promoted to higher grades, where I performed exceptionally well and continued to excel academically.
I later graduated from The Gambia High School and successfully completed my Nursing degree. Today, I dedicate my achievements to my late father, his brothers, my beloved mom and every single person who supported me throughout this difficult but rewarding journey.
My advice to myself and to the young people of Tanji is this: take education seriously. Nobody truly knows what the future holds, but preparing ourselves with quality education can open doors to opportunities and enable us to contribute positively to our communities. Education can help us initiate progressive projects for the betterment of Tanji and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Today, I feel deeply overwhelmed and inspired by the level of enthusiasm I see among the young people of Tanji. Their determination, energy, and desire to pursue higher education give me hope for a brighter future for our community.
