This black-and-white combo is simple, yet still full of possibilities.

新潟三条を散歩してふと見つけて立ち寄った三条ものづくり学校、入口に生地の端材が置いてあり各々活用できるコーナーがあった。背景に置く黒の布を探していたのでちょうど良いと選び始めたものの、黒の色調も様々で柄入りも多くかなり悩んでようやく決められた。他の一角では鉄のコーナーがあり鋼や区別が丁寧に説明されてあった、さすが三条プロの街。事務局の方々がとても優しく対応してくださり雨が始まって傘も渡して下さって、大変お世話になりました。
包丁作りの工場も少し見学させてもらい、街中あちこちにある贅沢な職人技の建築物にひたすらポカンと口を開けて見て回った。本成寺にもふらっと行ったらあまりの迫力に見惚れてしまい電車を逃しそうになり。地元に根付いてる人達が生活している導線がはっきりしていてとても歩きやすく、皆さん本当に優しく良い街だった。新潟は広いのでまだ行きたい場所が沢山ある。

I was inspired several years ago by the calligraphy of a Japanese artist I heard about through a friend.
Their use of bold ink strokes and the quiet strength of empty space stayed with me — and sparked the beginning of a ceramic series that I’ve been developing ever since.

Last year, I finally had the chance to meet the artist in person in Bordeaux. They were just as inspiring as I had imagined.

In this series, I use white glaze as a base, with black glaze splashed or poured over it — a ceramic response to the energy and stillness I felt in their work.

This style seems especially well-suited to flat shiboridashi teapots for gyokuro.
The contrast and subtle irregularities reflect both intention and chance — much like the art of tea itself.

The series is called Traces of Ink.

Un été en Bretagne
夏休みにブルターニュへ。この辺りはハイシーズンが8月からということでまだのんびりとしていた。漠然と描いてた風の強そうな浜辺というイメージと違い、海に囲まれ漁業はもちろん緑豊かで酪農と農業が強い地域。知人が借りた家に1週間お邪魔するので楽しみにしていたご飯作り。フランス人家族とキッチンに立ちフランス家庭料理のこだわりと哲学を知る、これだこれこの感覚。夏なので手早くシンプルに新鮮食材を味わい奥深さを学ぶなんと幸せな日々か。昆布とたけのこドレッシングを持参し、何度も牡蠣や鯛を昆布締めにしみんなで昼夜食べ続ける。
ムイエットという細長く切ったパンとココットに入れた半熟卵の朝ごはん、作る腕もあるだろうけども数分の手間で1日幸せが続くなんて。出掛けた時はガレット&シードレを、海辺の牡蠣屋では新鮮な牡蠣、全く飽きず。
ちょうどブルターニュ祭りが続きあちらこちらで見かける、バクパイプ奏者の音楽でみんなで輪になりすぐに覚えられるステップでクルクル回って踊り歩いていく。誰でも参加できるウエルカムな懐の深さが心地よい。
私の初歩レベルのフランス語知識でもブルターニュ方言がかなり違うのは聞き分けられる。アイルランド語と近いそうな、民族衣装や家の造りも外国感(どこ基準)たっぷり。
本気ヨットや漁師の船が港にあり人生かけてる逞しさ。帆に風を受けて進んでいくレースは私には到底できると思えず、ロープの結びさえ覚えられないし海に関わる人全員を心から尊敬している。
曇り風晴れ雨がめくるめく空の中、新しい世界を垣間見てリフレッシュも充分できた良い夏の旅になりました。

This is a relatively standard form of tableware. I treated it as a foundation and worked on it with focus and intention, gradually refining the size S-XL, shape, and other elements.

I usually use this size L most often at home. It’s a very practical form for serving soup, pasta, nantoka-don, or several different dishes, and it fits easily in the dishwasher.

With several hot days ahead, I’ve been having simple dinners of salad and somen noodles. The key point is a gift from Japan—fresh myoga (Japanese ginger).

My friend Ken has started a Japanese organic vegetable in Brandenburg. The first harvest is expected this summer, so please keep an eye out for it.
