The body points the way. Aside from injuries and fatigue, physical symptoms can be signs of misbalance - they can be greater manifestations of our internal emotional condition. As a mode of therapeutic healing, massage relieves muscular tension and restores natural balance to the numerous systems that regulate our bodies. All types of bodywork are a natural way to restore a healthy balanced mind-body connection, which ultimately reduces stress.
‘Samatha' means calm, tranquility or serenity in Sanskrit (शमथ). It is only when our minds are calm and our bodies relaxed, that we can operate at our optimum. Accessing inner tranquility is an important step in unlocking our fullest potential. Allow yourself a moment of rest from the relentless ‘doing’ and take a moment to surrender into presence through your body.
Massage itself does not do the healing. Rather, I see bodywork as a way to promote and activate the body's innate capacity to heal. Healing takes place when our nervous systems are in a parasympathetic state. Cultivating Samatha (inducing calmness) is a means by which our bodies can regulate themselves into the parasympathetic state - the state required for healing to take place.
