MR:comp GmbH and partner HPC Dr. Kainz
take a special look at implant safety in low- and mid-field MRI systems up to 0.55 T with the support of Siemens Healthineers. The development of test methods for the MR safety of medical devices in low magnetic fields is planned to be driven forward in line with market and normative requirements.
🔬 Why is this important? Currently, most MR Conditional labeling of medical devices are for 1.5 T and 3 T MRI only. Although higher safety can be expected at lower fields due to the lower magnetic forces and lower RF interaction based on the longer RF wavelength, only a few implants are officially approved for low-field examinations. However, patients with implants in particular would benefit greatly from this type of MR scanner, as low-field systems have a beneficial effect on the quality of results and MR images in the vicinity of implants.
💡 Our goal: We want to change this situation! Customized test methods will be developed specifically for low-field MRI in order to safely test medical devices in these systems from a simplified perspective of a "safety envelope". These methods will also be proposed to international standardization organizations.
🛠️ The path to a solution: As soon as these test methods are established, this will lead to significantly simplified approval of implants at different field strengths, especially at lower fields. This will not only ensure wider access to MRI for patients with implants in low-field-based MRIs, but will also lead to a greater number of MR Conditional implants and thus better patient care overall. In addition, these new standards could have a significant impact on the future of medical imaging.
We are looking for implant manufacturers of non-active and active implants for common development. All interested implant manufacturers as well as MR users like radiologists, MR physicists and MRI techs, please contact us at info@mrcomp.com with the keyword “Low-Field” in the subject line for participation.
Stay tuned, we will keep you up to date on the progress!
