As most of you know, I love me some Vinyasa Flow with its freedom, creativity, and playfulness. 🤸♀️✨
But, practicing Ashtanga truly is special and unique. There is something about connecting to this old heritage of the practice, the consistent routine, the focus. 🙏🕉️
So, here are 3 of my favourite reasons to practice Ashtanga:
1️⃣ HONOURING THE LINEAGE OF THE PRACTICE
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga was created in the 1940s by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Its foundation are the breath, the Bandhas (energetic locks) and the Drishti (gaze). Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga forms the basis for most modern, dynamic Yoga styles. Practicing Ashtanga is a way to connect back to the roots and honour the long lineage of our Yoga practice.
2️⃣ FIND A MOVING MEDITATION WITHIN THE SET SEQUENCE
Ashtanga follows a fixed sequence of poses. which allows practitioners to move beyond choreography and focus more on the subtleties of the practice - such as the breath, alignment, and mental state. As you become familiar with the sequence, it turns into a moving meditation, helping you go deeper into the practice by concentrating on the internal experience rather than external choreography.
3️⃣ DEVELOP AN INDEPENDENT SELF-PRACTICE
Did you know that, traditionally, the goal for Ashtangis was to develop an independent from the teacher, self-led practice? Well, the Ashtanga Sequences provide the perfect foundation to develop a self-practice based on a consistent sequence. Traditionally, Yoga Teachers were meant to serve as guides, not as permanent dependencies.
