Originally from Georgia, Mariam is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in International Health Sciences at Fulda University of Applied Sciences, Germany. With a strong background in medicine and an MD degree from Tbilisi State Medical University, Mariam brings invaluable expertise and passion to our team.
Her dedication to global health, health equity, and gender equality is inspiring. Mariam aspires to lead initiatives that empower marginalized communities and promote women's rights, particularly in her home country. From Challenges to Change: My Journey in Global Health :

After beginning my career in medicine, I experienced firsthand the inequalities and challenges that affect both healthcare workers and patients. Recognizing that these issues extend far beyond my home country, I made the decision to focus on creating systemic changes at a global level. This motivated me to pursue a degree in International Health Sciences at Fulda University in Germany.
At Evaplan, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to apply my theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. Evaplan provides a dynamic environment that fosters innovation and supports impactful global health projects. The Romanian Red Cross has been at the forefront of strengthening healthcare services in rural areas, where access to medical care is often limited. The Health CARAVAN Project, run by a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses, and dedicated Romanian Red Cross volunteers, provides essential healthcare directly to communities. With a mobile setup, the Caravan offers a wide range of services, including general medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, and dentistry.

Each county received a tailored team composition based on the results of Community Needs Analyses. The project was initiated to improve the quality of life for Romanian citizens but also support displaced individuals from Ukraine as they navigate the Romanian healthcare system.

As Cătălina Buzea, Health Programme Manager at the Romanian Red Cross, highlights, “The Health Caravan gives both Romanians and people from Ukraine confidence, hope, and useful information that helps them settle and thrive.”

Currently in the final evaluation phase of this project. Evaplan will be conducting the evaluation. Our experienced colleague, Schimpf, is currently in Romania, conducting research to gather insights and recommendations for future project phases. This evaluation aims to ensure that healthcare services remain accessible and responsive to the needs of underserved and displaced communities.

Speakers:

Joao Almeida: Since 2001, she has worked at the Institute of Social Security, IP of the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security . She has tackled issues focusing on social protection for particularly vulnerable groups, basic income and social benefits, social services, social emergencies, exceptional scenarios (civil protection), migration including refugees, active ageing, long-term care, formal and informal care, phenomena such as domestic violence, homelessness and human trafficking, among others. She has contributed to national and international legislative efforts, participated in inter-ministerial groups, and collaborated with global organizations like the UN and EU. Since 2022, she has been an expert with the EU's SOCIEUX+, conducting missions in various countries.

Breza: Dr. Breza is a senior expert in social protection, formerly a department director at the Polish Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, with a focus on policies for senior citizens. She was a resident expert for the EU-China Social Protection Reform Project and participated in working groups for the UN and EU. She holds a PhD from the Warsaw School of Economics.
