At GENETECH Europe, we often hear the question👇
Can my competing mare undergo ICSI? 🐴

❌ Myth:
“Embryo production should only be done after the mare retires from sport.” This is one of the most common assumptions in horse breeding.

✅ Fact:
Mares that are actively competing can safely undergo OPU–ICSI without interrupting their training or competition schedule, when the procedure is well indicated and performed by an experienced veterinary team. Waiting until retirement often means missing the mare’s reproductive peak, when oocyte quality and embryo production potential are at their best. Starting earlier allows breeders to work with higher-quality oocytes and increase the chances of producing viable embryos.

The OPU–ICSI technique makes this possible because:
▶️ oocytes can be collected without relying on ovulation
▶️ the procedure does not require intensive hormonal stimulation
▶️ reproduction can be integrated into the mare’s athletic routine

This means that while the mare continues to compete, her genetics can already be preserved in the laboratory.

OPU is a gentle and well-controlled procedure, performed under sedation, analgesia and guided by ultrasound. Recovery is usually quick, and most mares return to their normal routine shortly after the procedure, depending on veterinary assessment.

In summary:
ICSI is not only a solution for retired mares. It is a smart planning tool that allows breeders to preserve valuable genetics at the optimal moment - even during the mare’s athletic career.
