One of the best things about being a Doula is that I receive the honor of spending time with newborn babies. I find them fascinating creatures. It feels like they are floating in time and space - between this new physical world, their parent’s womb, and another dimension I don’t know much about, but I think I was once there.

Newborns live in a reality without time, where each sound, light, and sensation is new. They are entirely in the moment - something that grownups have been trying to achieve all their lives. They are here, and at the same time, a part of them is somewhere else. They know everything and nothing.
In the first two weeks or so after birth, you can see how newborns descend slowly onto the earth, arriving. It is beautiful, sorrowful, amazing, and unique.

I hold every baby with respect and gratitude for the inspiration they give me to be with what is. For the knowledge they have, that I once had and consistently aspire to re-learn.

This photo was taken in the middle of the night at a hospital. Mama is resting after an elected c-section while the baby sleeps on me. We breathe together. For a few moments, in the quiet of the night - there is nothing else in this world.

Like snowflakes, each Doula is unique and has different experiences, tools, methods, and energy. I suggest the following points as things that, in my opinion, should affect your choice:

• In getting to know your potential Doula, if you feel an intuitive connection with her/him/them, not necessarily an intellectual one, but more energetically - that's a great sign. You shouldn't choose a Doula just because she/he/they share the same beliefs as you or one that will make the same choices as you. For some clients, that can be a bonus. From the Doula's side - that shouldn't affect the quality of her/his/their service.

• You should feel that your Doula is trying to really see you and supports you in seeing yourself. This is necessary to understand your needs together and the ability to answer them.

• Choose a Doula with the knowledge and tools to support you the best. You may meet a Doula that you connect with, but maybe your case needs some services or experience that she/he/they don't have. However, I wouldn't say this is a critical point. It depends on the service that is needed and the character of the Doula.

• Pick a Doula that you can choose to be free and authentic with. You will share intimate, delicate, challenging, and extreme moments with your Doula. So don't waste your time on someone you can't bring yourself to feel comfortable with.

• The most obvious and important thing in choosing a Doula is that they can be available for you when you need them. Find out if a Doula is taking parallel clients and if she/he/they work with a backup Doula. That is not a must; it depends on your needs.

With that said, if you don't find the "perfect" Doula for you - that is ok! Remember that in the end, Doulas are professionals that can offer you a lot, also when you don't feel a strong connection with them. Anything that supports you somehow during these times is significant, even if it is not ALL the support you need.

If you want to consult me in this matter and/or check if I am the right Doula for you - you are welcome to contact me in English, Hebrew, or German, here or through my email - arbelifhar@gmail.com.

What is a Postpartum Doula?

During pregnancy, it is common to focus mainly on the birth. Aspiring to be prepared for the after-birth period can be a big gift for your future self.
The postpartum period is an interesting time that may bring many challenges. You will start a long recovery process at all levels and discover yourself as a parent.

If you feel that extra support at this time will be beneficial for you, consider hiring a Postpartum Doula.

Ideally, you will meet with the Doula before your birth to get acquainted and build a plan for after labor. The Doula should understand what is essential for you and which kind of environment will support you.

Different Doulas may offer various services and knowledge. Try to make sure that the Doula can deliver what you may need.

Here are some options for how a postpartum Doula can support you:

∞ Physical, emotional, and mental support - the Doula can support you to process the birth, connect to yourself, and unload whatever you need, however you need.

∞ Make sure that you get the space you need.

∞ Housework like cleaning & cooking.

∞ Help with baby care and with siblings if there are any.

∞ Offer knowledge regarding different baby care methods that resonate with you, like baby language, baby massage, cloth diapers, elimination communication, baby-led weaning, etc.

∞ Support with breast/chest-feeding.

∞ Different rituals for your body, mind, and soul.

∞ Support for other family members.

∞ Pampering, massaging, and feeding you grapes. You are the SUN darling!

While considering whether to hire a Doula for your birth or not, I recommend asking yourself: Who can attend the birth? Make a list of ALL the people in your life that can be there, and you may want them to. If this list is empty, that is, of course, totally fine. Look at this list and think about these people, if any. See what feelings in your body come up, which emotions. Observe your inner reaction to this list. If you feel relaxed, content, and excited - it looks like you have the support that you need. If you feel worried, can't fully breathe, unsettled, or anything in that range of feelings - ask yourself why.

Sometimes it is obvious -
"My Partner wants to be there, but he is not good in stressful situations and doesn't know anything about birth."
"I will give birth alone, and I don't want to."
"My Mother will come, which is great, but I also need someone that is not so involved."
In this case, it will probably be a good idea for you to have a Doula.

If your needs are not very clear for you, try to be with it for a while and see if clarity kicks in. If it doesn't, consider just going for it and hiring a Doula, especially if you have the financial means. Studies show at least 30% less chance of complications during birth when a Doula is present. In addition, the presence of a Doula has an immense effect on the mental, emotional, and spiritual experiences of the birthing person and their ability to process them.

Unless, for whatever reason, the Doula doesn't fit you in real-time - I can't imagine a situation where it will be better not to have one. Even if she/he/they are just around, offering a sip of water at the right moment, noticing when there is too much light for you, or allowing your birth partner to take a bathroom break - it's worth it. It is another person that holds the space you wish to have. It is another safety net that can significantly impact your birth even without being aware of it.

*Ask around if you feel you need a Doula but can't afford it. Some organizations may offer support. Don't hesitate to contact Doulas in your area to ask if they can offer a discount or a pro-bono service. Worse case - they will say no. Even if you can't find a Doula in your area - try and find a Doula that can support you online, before, after, and even during the birth. Of course, it is not the same, but I believe it is better than nothing.

April is the Cesarean Awareness Month. This initiative was created by ICAN (International Cesarean Awareness Network).

So why is cesarean awareness critical?
• Because people who had a cesarean are seen as if they "didn't really give birth."
• Because people who had a cesarian are often ashamed to tell their birth story and feel that they have failed to birth naturally.
• Because people who have a cesarian don't always have a community that understands and support them.
• Because people who had a cesarean are being told they can't give birth vaginally.
• Because people who plan or need to have a cesarean are not aware of the option to have a "gentle cesarian" / "french cesarian."
• Because more health providers should treat a cesarian as any birth, the birthing person should be in charge and empowered.
• Because too many cesareans could have been prevented or are not really medically necessary.

If you need or plan to have a cesarian, try to educate yourself about your different options. If you lack resources, I will be happy to send you some.

Many people think a Doula is only for "natural" birth, but many Doulas, including me, offer their services also before, during, and after a Cesarian Birth. You may think it is unnecessary, as all you do is to "lie there," but actually, you are doing a lot in a cesarean birth. You are giving birth.
A Doula can be there for you by:
• Preparing for the birth.
• Advocate your choices in the operating room.
• Support you (and your partners) physically and emotionally during the delivery.
• Caring for you after the baby is born (at which point, if there is a partner, they will probably be with the baby).
• Supporting the first attempts to breastfeed.
• Helping you process the birth experience and recover physically, mentally, and emotionally.

And whatever else you may need.

If you want to think together about your possible need for a Doula, I am here for you - arbelifhar@gmail.com.

You are welcome to contact me in English, Hebrew, or German.

A Doula is a nonclinical companion and coach who gives emotional, educational, advocacy, and sometimes spiritual support during reproductive-related processes and end-of-life experiences. Birth Doulas focus only on labor itself. Full-Spectrum Doulas, like myself, are trained to offer services around all reproductive occasions:
• The attempt to get pregnant (or not to).
• Pregnancy.
• Birth (all kinds).
• Postpartum period ("the 4th trimester").
• Early parenthood.

Each Doula provides a different range of services and tools, while what guides them is to support you in finding and realizing your way in all of this; they are not supposed to push their agenda or make you fill unconfident regarding your choices. The Doula can support you in a long process, a few meetings, or even just one talk.

A Doula can offer support also to the client's partners, children, family, and friends. Although Doulas may provide expertise and knowledge regarding healthcare, they are not healthcare providers. Doulas are care providers.

------------------------------
Hello darlings,

My name is Arbel, I was born in Israel in 1987, and I live mainly in Germany. I share my life with my partner and our child, whom I gave birth to.

I certified Full Spectrum Doula from DTI - Doula Trainings International. I offer knowledge and support as a reproductive educator and pregnancy, birth, and postpartum Doula. I practice DTI's focus on reproductive justice, gender variant inclusive language, and SDM (Slow Doula Method), which helps hold a safe and authentic space to be, breathe, express, choose and give birth.

I acknowledge myself as a feminist, q***r, activist, and migrant person. These titles give me the passion for my work as a Doula. My main goal is to understand what is the best space and support specifically for my client, advocate for them, and do my best in bringing that to reality.

As your Doula, I trust and support you, your body, your choices, your partner (if you have one/two/...), your baby, and the process.

I offer the following services in English, Hebrew, and German:
Support and care
• in deciding if to become a parent and how
• in the full spectrum of reproductive experiences, like conception, fertility treatments, abortion, miscarriage, loss, birth (including stillbirths and C-sections), postpartum care for birthing persons, partners, and babies.
• in your journey as a parent, I will be happy to support you in finding your authentic style of parenthood, practically, mentally, and consciously.

In my work, I combine different various learnings and tools I gathered along the way, for example, Alexander Technique, Body-Centered Heart Work, Or****ic Birth, and Hypnobirthing.

To see if and how I can support you, I offer a free conversation where we can get to know each other, understand your needs, and see if I can satisfy them. I provide services online and/or in-person (in Leipzig, Berlin & Israel). You are very welcome to send me a message here or to my email: arbelifhar@gmail.com

• Being a Doula is my job, but it is also my activism. Please get in touch with me even if you don't think you can't pay my full rate, and we will try and find a solution together.
