Dr. Michael Holohan, Psychoanalyst in Munich

Dr. Michael Holohan, Psychoanalyst in Munich I offer individual psychoanalysis and psychological counseling in my private practice in Schwabing.

The psychoanalytic method emphasizes the particularity of each person and is based on the idea that our unconscious thoughts and feelings influence our actions and emotional states in ways we are not aware of and that are sometimes at odds with our conscious beliefs and wants. In my practice, I provide a confidential and comfortable space to speak freely about your experiences and problems in order to analyze and address conflicts between your conscious desires and the unconscious patterns that also shape your lived experience. I work in English with people from all nationalities, backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and age groups.

DREAMS, WORDS, DESIRE

"Freud describes a dream as a certain knot, an associative network of analysed verbal forms that intersect as such, not because of what they signify, but thanks to a sort of homonymy. It is when you come across a single word at the intersection of three of the ideas that come to the subject that you notice that the important thing is that word and not something else.

It is when you have found the word that concentrates around it the greatest number of threads in the mycellium that you know it is the hidden centre of gravity of the desire in question. That, in a word, is the point I was talking about just now, the nodal point where discourse forms a hole"

Jacques Lacan, My Teaching, p. 28

People with borderline personality disorder are often treated as if they have a personality flaw, rather than mental health issues stemming from trauma. It's time we changed its name.

The psychoanalytic method involves talking and saying whatever comes to mind. For many people, this can seem strange. How is this supposed to help me? In this video, psychoanalyst Astrid Gessert gives a very nice short explanation of how the "talking cure" works.

This past week has been brutal, in terms of what has been coming across my newsfeed. And 2016 wasn't exactly a picnic either. So lately I've been thinking a lot about the mental health impact of a steady avalanche of Really Bad News. Many of us (myself included) deal with mental health challenges on...

Psychoanalysis has been widely criticised and largely obscured from the mainstream treatment of mental illness. Why do these three psychoanalysists believe that their practice still plays an important role in healing diseases of the mind? Lynne Malcom reports.

"We can get very attached to a single picture of ourselves. The most difficult thing to accept for many of us is that there is continual change built in. There is a wish to fix a kind of CV about oneself which is a set of formulas: the kind of person I think I am. It is useful in the way that a really bad map is useful. [...] But I also think that the idea of self-knowledge is hugely overrated. In our society it is as though it has been generally agreed that what we need is always more self-knowledge. Often it is just an anxiety state, another protection racket."

Sobriety doesn't guarantee a good life. By focusing on the whole person—not just the drug or drug use—psychoanalysis can help addicts grow in ways that go beyond recovery.
