Building independence, together 🌍
What started as a donation is now a long-term partnership.
At last week’s 12th Global Neurosurgery Course in Dar es Salaam, the focus was on strengthening local capabilities at Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) through hands-on training and exchange.
Organized by Prof. Roger Härtl, MD, in collaboration with MOI, Weill Cornell Medicine in New York and the North American Spine Society (NASS), the course brought together global expertise and local practice.
Together with the Weill Cornell Medicine Tanzania Neurosurgery Project, the Brainlab Social Program and the Right.Brain Foundation e.V., we have supported clinical practice at MOI for over three years—initially focusing on spine procedures and more recently expanding into cranial applications. 🤝
To date, 65 spine and 29 cranial cases have been performed using navigation, supporting pre-operative planning, streamlining workflows and guiding complex cases.
On site, Brainlab colleagues Dominique Doerner, product owner and Christoph Hahn, software engineer, worked closely with the local team, sharing knowledge while learning from real-world clinical environments.
The result is a program that continues to grow in confidence, capability and independence 📈
Because real impact comes from continuity, collaboration and local ownership ✨
Special thanks to the team onsite: Mariam Mzingi, MD, Hamisi Shabani, MD, Romani Sabas, MD and Elo Ibekwe.
