Strengthening Collaboration in Ecuador: Training, Community, and Future Planning 🤝 🌎

We are happy to inform you about three important activities recently carried out in Ecuador within the framework of our collaboration.

The first was the successful conclusion of the second edition of the Scientific Writing Workshop, held this year in Ecuador. We welcomed 10 participants from CIHLMU Latin America partners, CIHLMU alumni and GENERA Project partners in Ecuador, including colleagues from Universidad de Cuenca, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and Universidad de las Américas. The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen the capacity of researchers to publish their results, particularly those developed under the One Health approach and within the OH-TARGET project. Conducted in a hybrid format, the program combined eight weeks of online training on Moodle, covering project descriptions, article objectives, and statistical data analysis, with one week of intensive in-person sessions in Ecuador (August 25–29, 2025). During the in-person phase, participants presented the first drafts of their scientific articles and received valuable feedback and guidance for improvement.

As a second activity, and as part of the closing events of this year’s GENERA Project, we had the opportunity to visit the rural community of El Tambo, Cañar. Organized by Universidad de Cuenca and the Municipality of El Tambo in collaboration with the Center for International Health, this visit provided a platform to present local needs, exchange experiences, and jointly explore the outlines of a potential project proposal. The engagement not only strengthened the dialogue between academia, local authorities, and the community but also set the stage for future collaboration.

Finally, on September 1 we concluded this year’s GENERA Project activities and initiated the planning process for 2026. A central highlight is that these plans will be presented and integrated into the upcoming CIH Latin America Strategic Meeting in Brazil, where our partners will be joining to shape the next steps and strengthen our common agenda.

We extend our sincere thanks to the GENERA Project partner universities for making these activities possible, with special appreciation to Universidad de Cuenca for its hospitality. We look forward to continuing to build on these collaborations and to deepening the integration of our partners within the Latin American network.

On September 17–18, 2025, the Center for International Health (CIHLMU) successfully held its annual online Cooperation Meeting. The gathering brought together partners and colleagues from around the globe to strengthen collaboration, exchange ideas, and define strategic directions for the year ahead within the CIHLMU and OH-TARGET framework.

The meeting opened with a welcome note by Dr. Günter Fröschl, CIHLMU Board Member from the Tropical Institute, who provided an overview of the CIHLMU and OH-TARGET. He reflected on the history of CIHLMU and highlighted key achievements of the past two years, including the start of the second funding phase of OH-TARGET, awarded in 2024. This was followed by a welcome note from Sherif Azab-Els, representing the DAAD. He introduced the Exceed Program, the funding source of OH-TARGET, and emphasized OH-TARGET highlights from the DAAD perspective.

Participants then joined parallel sessions on key institutional topics. One group focused on administrative procedures, discussing rules and regulations related to recruitment processes, purchases, and payments. The second group explored CIHLMU’s communication strategy, with a special focus on the upcoming website relaunch, the CIHLMU corporate design and more.

The regional strategy meetings formed the core of the Cooperation Meeting. On Day 1, the Latin America group, led by Bernarda Espinoza and Verónica Encina, drafted a detailed strategic plan with events scheduled throughout 2026. On Day 2, the focus shifted to the Asia group, chaired by Fabian Jacobs and Dr. Fröschl, and the Africa group meeting, facilitated by Günter Fröschl, Fabian Jacobs, Andrea Jobst, and Ulrich von Both. Both groups conducted an in-depth SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats) analysis of their current situation and defined key action points to be pursued until the next Cooperation Meeting.

The meeting concluded with a presentation of strategies from each group and closing remarks by Andrea Jobst, CIHLMU Board member from the area Global Mental Health, which tied together the outcomes of the regional discussions and laid the foundation for the next phase of CIH cooperation.

The CIHLMU Cooperation Meeting 2025 once again proved to be a vital platform for joint planning and knowledge exchange, reaffirming CIHLMU’s mission to empower health professionals and foster international partnerships.

On 20th August 2025, the CIH Competence Center at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) collaborated with the NMEP, Ofoase Ayirebi District Assembly, PAMCA, and community leaders to celebrate World Mosquito Day. The event began with a float through the town, followed by health talks, exhibitions, and free health screenings. Speakers reminded everyone that mosquitoes spread malaria and dengue, and that prevention starts with us. Together, as families and communities, we can keep our environment clean and protect each other from mosquito-borne diseases.

📢Register now to our CIHLMU online course "Antibiotics Resistance & Marine Conservation: A One Health Approach.” 🪸💊

Antibiotic resistance is a global health threat because infections caused by resistant bacteria in humans and animals become difficult to treat with the available antibiotics. Thus, antibiotic resistance is considered a One Health problem that affects the lives of humans, animals, and the environment. This phenomenon originates from the ability of bacteria and their genes to spread reciprocally between species. However, the overuse of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine and agriculture can significantly increase the spread and persistence of antibiotic resistance in various ecosystems.

For instance, antibiotic-resistant bacteria and their genes have been found in vital water ecosystems, such as lakes, oceans and rivers. These problematic findings can be attributed to discharges from aquaculture and other types of agricultural practices, pharmaceutical industries, and waste from cities and hospitals, presenting global implications for marine wildlife and humans.
This course links two priority topics, antibiotic resistance and marine conservation, under the One Health approach, as they are interconnected and have widespread implications for human, animal, and environmental health.

• Course dates: 1 October – 11 December, 2025
• Registration Deadline: 28 September, 2025
• Target group: Master’s and PhD students from human, environmental, and animal health, as well as social sciences
• Credits: 3 ECTS
• Format: Blended learning, with asynchronous work and 6 synchronous sessions

🎉 We are happy to announce the successful completion of the Digital Storytelling course for the Summer Semester 2025!

This was the first edition offered in Spanish, designed for participants from the CIHLMU and EUGLOH networks. Over eight weeks, the course brought together a diverse and dynamic group of 24 participants from countries including Norway, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Mexico. Their professional backgrounds spanned public health, language education, engineering, psychology, occupational health, the arts, and teacher training, creating a rich, interdisciplinary learning environment and inspiring meaningful exchanges.

Participants explored the fundamentals of digital storytelling, focusing on how personal narratives can raise awareness around pressing health and social issues. They also gained hands-on experience with the Pageflow platform, learning how to integrate images, audio, and video, and how to craft compelling, emotionally resonant stories.

The final projects covered topics such as mental health, environmental challenges, nutrition, education, and social equity — each reflecting personal insight, creativity, and strong engagement.
