An enlarged prostate is a common condition, especially as men get older. While it is not cancer, it can still significantly affect quality of life.

Typical symptoms include:

Frequent urination, especially at night
Weak urine flow
Difficulty starting or emptying the bladder

These symptoms are often gradual and can be mistaken as a normal part of aging. However, they may indicate benign prostate enlargement (BPH) and should be evaluated properly.

Diagnosis is important, not only to confirm BPH, but also to rule out other causes, including prostate cancer.

Depending on the severity, treatment options range from observation and medication to minimally invasive procedures.

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) combines a chemotherapy agent with short electrical pulses that temporarily open the membranes of cancer cells. This allows the medication to enter the tumor cells more effectively, increasing its local impact while limiting exposure to surrounding tissue.

In prostate cancer care, ECT can be used as a focal treatment approach, targeting specific tumor areas within the prostate. The goal is to control the tumor while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Prostate cancer is a complex disease, not only because of the tumour itself, but also due to microscopic cancer cells that may be present throughout the body even after local treatment. Traditional approaches like surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy often focus only on the tumour in the prostate and can weaken the immune system in the process.

At VITUS Privatklinik, we combine immunotherapy with focal treatments such as irreversible electroporation (IRE/NanoKnife™) to make tumour cells more visible to the immune system and enhance the immune response against residual microscopic disease.

This combined strategy is part of our broader effort to treat prostate cancer in a way that addresses both the local tumour and the systemic cancer cells while preserving quality of life.
