BACK TO PRACTICE

After two months of daily practice under the guidance of my teacher Sharathji, enjoying the privilege to just be a student again, I’m back to teaching at

Like every time when going to Mysore, I made new friends, made new experiences and learned more about myself and yoga in general.

Inspiring talks with beautiful minded people, learnings from every day life at the shala, and the good food that is to be found all over the place recharged my batteries and teaching has never felt so right.

Since the beginning of February, I’m offering 4 morning practice days: 2 Mysore classes and 2 Selfpractice days. I look forward to meeting you on the mat and to sharing my passion for ashtanga yoga.

BACK TO THE NEW
After 2 intense months in Mysore, practising under the guidance of my teacher Sharathji, I’m back to Hamburg.
But this time, being back does not simply mean getting back to normal. While in India, I’ve been thinking a lot about how to revive the local Ashtanga community, which has fallen apart under COVID. Even though practice at a shala is no problem anymore, many students who have lost their practice are still struggling to get back on track.
Just returning to regular classes may still be one step too much since a feeling of shame often occurs after dropping out. Many of us hesitate after taking a longer break even though there is absolutely no reason for this.
My extended morning programme which starts on Monday at , includes 2 additional morning classes for selfpractice. This might be a good setting to re-introduce yourself to practice in company of fellow yogis and without a teacher watching. For slowly growing back into it and once you’re confident enough, maybe join the Mysore classes again.
I‘ll be practising alongside the students and will be open for a little talk after class. My own practice oftentimes is challenging as well and currently I‘m working around a hip issue, which has me modifying a lot but never giving up on my precious practice.
When we think of ”coming back“ to practice, we might relate to memories of the past, to a former practice level or issue. But what about thinking of it as coming back to something new, like discovering new shores?
Every day is different and the experiences of the past few years have changed a lot for most of us. Yoga is still there to support us in coping with life‘s challenges and showing us a clearer picture of ourselves within the whole chaos.
So don’t be shy to risk a glance and rediscover what yoga can do for you in these unsteady times.
Don’t just go back to normal, but maybe to something new.

MIXED EMOTIONS
The season’s official photo with Sharathji is the ultimate sign that lots of goodbyes will be said soon.
Goodbye to our beloved teacher(s) - to fellow students (= family) - to our rickshaw driver friends - to all the lovely places, cafes and restaurants - to our landlords and -ladies - to a carefree time - to our home away from home.
But actually it‘s rather like saying „See you next season“ which implies the hope for the next „Hello“ to reconnect and continue.
For me, the most emotional moment of every Mysore season is the last chanting class. At the end of these particular classes, Lakshmishji always shares a little story and his good wishes for our journeys back home - some little gems to carry as souvenirs, some little food for thought to chew on.
And here they come - the tears. He gets me each and every time. I‘m not a crying person at all, but on this occasion and in this place, it just keeps happening.
I look back on two intense months with gratitude and I look forward to being reunited with my loved ones back home at the same time.
Recharged, inspired and fully motivated to dive into this year and go with whatever it may bring.
And hopefully, I’ll be back to this wonderful place next season.

LIBERATION
The most wonderful and beneficial thing that yoga can do for us, is giving us clarity and freedom.
Leading a self determined life has been one of my goals since my teenage years. Looking at society and its conventions, observing people around me in the place where I grew up in, I was convinced that there must be more and I don’t mean this in material terms. Basically it felt like I was born an alien in the wrong place most of the time.
My father was often worried what I would do with my life since I had no plan. I did not know which way to choose, yet I was always clear about what I did not want: a planned life.
I used to tell him ”I don’t care how much money I make as long as I love what I am doing“. Today I know, that this is the best attitude for a successful undertaking: doing it for the sake of it.
Over the years, with crazy detours through the toxic world of advertising, which brought me a lot of awards but kept pushing me over my limits at the same time, I arrived at a place where I really could live up to my ideals and yoga supported me a lot in getting there.
I freed myself more and more from the ballast of conventions and got more and more clear about who I really am. And at some point, a few years ago, my father said to me "Now I know that I never have to worry about you". I‘m happy he understood this before he died in summer of 22.
In the beginning, freeing yourself from stuff may feel like a loss, like facing an abyss, like dying a bit. But then, this action of letting go opens new horizons and lets you conquer a new piece of freedom - and this feels like flying. Looking back, it‘s often difficult to understand why we stayed in unhealthy situations for so long.
There is no such feeling as leaving things behind that don’t serve you. We tend to forget that most things in our lives once were our own choices. But why stick with them forever when everything else around us keeps changing all the time?
It’s simple, it‘s not easy but it’s always worth it.

REUNION
Friends are found, contacts are made, the community keeps growing and you keep seeing familiar faces wherever you turn. Mysore feels like true family, like understanding beyond words, like mutual support.
This season once again, I made great new friends and reunited with old ones. And like every time, there is a bunch of people that I spent most of the time with. Anne and Sandra have been part of my core Mysore family once more - like last season, too. What a beautiful coincidence that we came here at the same time!
Rickshaw rides, breakfasts, lunches, coffees and dinners - lots of conversations were shared, including laughter as well as tears.
There are 3 more practice days to go and leaving this bubble won’t be easy. But knowing that these wonderful people will soon be spread all over the world gives me a feeling of belonging wherever I go.

BLESSED
I‘ve been waiting to talk about this for weeks and now it‘s finally official. Today I got my authorization and thereby Sharathji’s blessing to officially teach Ashtanga Yoga.
I feel very honoured and grateful to be given this sign of trust and connectedness and will lovingly and responsibly hand on the knowledge from my guru‘s lineage.
I often dreamt of this but never really expected it to happen. Especially this season, since I’ve been practicing with an injury and a notable part of my āsana practice is therefore quite modified.
But this makes me appreciate the value of the gesture even more. Since it’s clearly not about performance, but about integrating the values of yoga into all of your life.
I look forward to bringing this home and to starting a new chapter in my teaching. The additional morning practice days are a step in the direction of rebuilding an Ashtanga community in Hamburg which I’ve been missing badly over the past years.
Can’t wait to come home! But for now, I’ll spend the rest of the day smiling in company of my lovely fellow students in the best place on earth.
