Medical Readiness Command, Europe hosts meeting with senior German Bundeswehr medical leader

SEMBACH, Germany - U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, hosted a meeting with Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Johannes Backus, Bundeswehr Surgeon General and commander of the Bundeswehr Medical Support Command, at the Medical Readiness Command, Europe Headquarters April 9. Among the topics covered during their meeting, the senior medical leaders discussed the structures and roles of U.S. military medical assets within the U.S. Army Europe and Africa area of operations. Maj. Gen. Backus also provided an update on the Bundeswehr’s innovative patient flow hub and cluster concept. The highly successful meeting concluded with a focus on future partnership opportunities, including bilateral operational planning teams to address complex medical problem sets encountered in large-scale combat operations. Medical Readiness Command, Europe commander takes part in French Armed Forces Medical Symposium

PARIS – More than 200 senior NATO medical leaders from across Europe gathered in Paris on Tuesday, Mar. 24, for a symposium hosted by the French Armed Forces Medical Service. Among the guest speakers at the symposium was U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. During his remarks to the assembly, Giraud emphasized the gravity of the current security landscape in Europe. The intent of the symposium was to address the urgent need for adapting allied military health services to meet the realities of high-intensity or large- scale combat operations (LSCO). The medical symposium, attended by military medical leaders from France, Germany, Spain, and the United States provided a critical platform for senior military medical leaders to share knowledge, discuss innovative medical strategies, and enhance interoperability among allied forces. The central theme of the symposium was the adaptation of military health services in the face of a major military engagement.

Senior U.S. Army Medical leader in Europe Highlights Allied Medical Readiness at Medical Symposium in London

LONDON – U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa emphasized the importance of collective medical readiness during the 2026 Deployed Medical & Healthcare Delivery (DMHD) symposium in London on March 24-25. More than 300 military and industry medical professionals from twenty NATO and allied partner countries attended the two-day event which focused on the challenges of deployed medical care. This year’s symposium featured in-depth discussions on the NATO Medical Action Plan, addressing key areas such as regulatory frameworks, mass casualty planning, patient evacuation, and medical logistics.

UNITED KINGDOM – Medical Readiness Command, Europe leadership had the opportunity to visit the British 2nd Medical Group Land Medical Training Center and tour their combat medical course training facilities in the United Kingdom Mar. 26. The Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3), established in 1982, recognizes excellence and promotes camaraderie among military medical personnel, honoring those who have made significant contributions to Army Medicine. The O2M3 not only honors individual achievements but also emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration within the medical community of the military.

Our Story

Regional Health Command Europe is the only Regional Health Command in the Army that is fully forward stationed - responsible for all Army medical treatment facilities, dental clinics, veterinary clinics and public health services within the European Command.

RHCE is made up of four subordinate commands: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Medical Department Activity Bavaria, Dental Health Command Europe and Public Health Command Europe. Together they enable RHCE to provide a trained, ready and capable health force at Army medical and dental treatment facilities in Germany, Italy and Belgium, while providing the full spectrum of Public Health and Veterinary services at military installations throughout Europe.

RHCE offers world-class health care to Department of Defense beneficiaries and their Families serving in EUCOM, AFRICOM, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command Areas of Responsibility.
