Defense Health Network Europe Civilian Employees Recognized for their Achievements

SEMBACH, Germany – The senior leaders of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud and Command Sgt. Maj. Kalani Kalili, hosted a townhall meeting at the Sembach Chapel Feb. 19 for members of both headquarters. The town hall meeting was part of an ongoing communication effort by the senior leaders to keep the military and civilian staff of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Defense Health Network Europe informed and to maintain transparency. As part of the town hall meeting, awards were presented to several civilian staff members of Defense Health Network Europe in recognition of their commitment to excellence, dedication and achievements.

Meet Capt. John Cornell, a native of San Antonio, Texas

LANDSTUHL, Germany - Capt. Cornell serves as the Entomology Chief for Public Health in Europe, where his work plays a critical role in protecting the health and readiness of U.S. service members. As a subject-matter-expert supporting the United States European Command theater of operations, Capt. Cornell provides assistance through vector surveillance, arthropod identification, and mitigation strategies that reduce disease risk for the warfighter. Entomology, the study of insects and related arthropods, is a field many people rarely consider until its absence is felt. From pest control and vector-borne disease prevention to agricultural and environmental support, Cornell’s expertise spans far beyond a single specialty.

Medical Readiness Command, Europe hosts United States Army Medical Research and Development Command Senior Leader

SEMBACH, Germany – U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud (center), commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Command Surgeon for U.S. Army Europe and Africa, along with Command Sgt. Maj. Kalani Kalili (right), Command Sergeant Major for Medical Readiness Command, Europe hosted U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Paula Lodi for a visit on Feb 11. Lodi is the Commanding General, United States Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC) and Deputy Assistant Director, Research and Development for Defense Health Agency. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command is the Army's medical materiel developer, with responsibility for medical research, development, and acquisition. The USAMRDC's expertise in these critical areas helps establish and maintain the capabilities the Army needs to remain ready and lethal on the battlefield.

Inaugural Meeting of the Rheinland-Pfalz Silver Caduceus Society

SEMBACH, Germany – U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe, director of Defense Health Network Europe and 21st Chief U.S. Army Medical Service Corps was guest speaker at the inaugural meeting of the Rheinland-Pfalz Silver Caduceus Society held Feb. 10 at the Sembach Kaserne Chapel. The inaugural event marked the beginning of an informal forum dedicated to the growth, mentorship, and professional development of U.S. Army Medical Service Corps officers serving throughout the Rheinland-Pfalz region in the Federal Republic of Germany. The origins of the Silver Caduceus Society can be traced back to the Republic of South Korea, where Army Medical Service Corps officers organized the first chapter in September 1967. Today, chapters of the Silver Caduceus Society serve as a professional development, mentoring, and networking organization for Army Medical Service Corps officers in the continental United States and overseas.

RAMSTEIN, Germany - More than 400 students at Ramstein Elementary School recently received a hands-on lesson in science thanks to volunteers from Public Health Command Europe.
Over the course of one week, entomologist U.S. Army Cpt. Jordan Cornell and Preventive Medicine Sgt. Devin Gay introduced students to the life cycle of insects and the role entomology plays in public health. Through interactive discussions and real-life examples, Cornell and Gay explained what defines an insect, what insects do in the environment and why understanding them matters.

Army Nurse Corps Celebrates 125 Years of Service

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany - U.S. Army Col. Ekerette Akpan (left front row), command Nurse Executive for Medical Readiness Command, Europe was among a group of senior nursing leaders and clinicians from Medical Readiness Command, Europe, 30th Medical Brigade, Medical Department Activity Bavaria (MEDDACB), Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), and the Air Force 86th Medical Squadron who convened at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Germany recently to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the United States Army Nurse Corps– a historic milestone recognizing over a century of dedicated service since Congress established the corps on February 2, 1901. The event was more than just a ceremonial observance - it was a demonstration of partnership, readiness, collaboration, and commitment to excellence in military nursing. It also reinforced the Army Nurse Corps’ enduring legacy and highlighted the operational relevance of Army nurses in both garrison and operational environments.

Illinois native and combat veteran promoted to rank of Colonel in U.S. Army

STELZENBERG, Germany – A Hudson, Illinois native and graduate of Iowa State University was recently promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army. U.S. Army Col. Paul Hester, who currently serves as the Force Health Protection Officer at Medical Readiness Command Europe, has had a long and varied career in service to his country. Hester has a diverse and decorated military career spanning from veterinary medicine to environmental science and multiple combat tours. Hosting the promotion ceremony was Brig. Gen. Roger Giraud, commander of Medical Readiness Command, Europe and Director of Defense Health Network Europe.

Regional Health Command Europe is the only Regional Health Command in the Army that is fully forward stationed - responsible for all Army medical treatment facilities, dental clinics, veterinary clinics and public health services within the European Command.

RHCE is made up of four subordinate commands: Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Medical Department Activity Bavaria, Dental Health Command Europe and Public Health Command Europe. Together they enable RHCE to provide a trained, ready and capable health force at Army medical and dental treatment facilities in Germany, Italy and Belgium, while providing the full spectrum of Public Health and Veterinary services at military installations throughout Europe.

RHCE offers world-class health care to Department of Defense beneficiaries and their Families serving in EUCOM, AFRICOM, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command Areas of Responsibility.
