This LP debut combines early-90s Black Metal, from an era when it was still defined by trance-like obscurity and evil harmonies instead of copying/negating certain prototypes, with the raw ferocity and apocalyptic fatalism from early Thrash and proto-Crust. Above all soar Klára’s manifold outlandish vocals, covering everything from demonic shrieks over angry growls to spooky clean invocations, making weirdos like Attila Csihar sound sane and comparisons to icons like Sabina Classen or Wendy O Williams almost silly. Their counterpoint lies in the impressive, rather proggish guitar work, moving between precise stakkato riffing and haunting tremolo melodies, while still leaving room for eclectic clean breaks and memorable, well-composed solos – perfectly accompanied by a gorgeously dirty and dense lowend from the bass. The final icing on the rhythm cake is delivered by the tight drumming, which, in the middle of all spectacular blast beat inferno and double bass carpet bombing, never loses track of what’s needed for the song itself and manages to stay versatile at the same time. Embedded in an organic production that denies any trigger skepticisms from the get-go and lets every drum sound like a drum, VOC leave no doubt that, despite all subtle crusty influences of yore, this is a full-fledged metal record!
