Obacht: Stechapfel (Datura stramonium) ist eine der stark giftigen heimischen Pflanzen; alle Pflanzenteile, besonders Samen und Wurzeln, enthalten Tropanalkaloide wie Scopolamin und Hyoscyamin, und schon geringe Mengen können schwere, teils tödliche Vergiftungen mit Halluzinationen, Atem‑ und Kreislaufstörungen auslösen – diese Pflanze gehört ausschließlich in kundige Hände und ist nicht für Selbstanwendung geeignet.[1][2][3][4][5]
Die gleichen Alkaloide wurden in früheren salbenartigen Zubereitungen genutzt, um ekstatische Bewusstseinszustände und „Flugerlebnisse“ zu erzeugen.[6][7][8][9] Später entwickelten Forscher aus Scopolamin abgewandelte Moleküle wie Butylscopolamin; in Buscopan entspannt dieses Derivat als Spasmolytikum die glatte Muskulatur von Magen‑Darm‑Trakt, Gallen‑ und Harnwegen, ohne die bewusstseinsverändernden Effekte des ursprünglichen Alkaloids.[10][11][12][13]
