One of the most beautiful and touching workshops she has ever done and I have been a part of was today. While we are in India a workshop was held by Prisha with the support of her aunt and her me as translators at times for the kids of the helpers we have and their friends. All smartly dressed up and smiling came spot on time and listened to all the instructions and followed along. What was beautiful was the way they understood all the instructions in her simple English that she laced with few Hindi words she knows. Proportions, colors, textures, shading, lighting and other practices that she uses she shared with them. The kids danced to some popular songs, enjoyed the snacks and drinks and showed off their art. We clicked photos and then they sprang a surprise….friendship day bands!! They tied to all of us and promised to practice art so that next year when they see us they would challenge her! 3 hours flew by and this memory will keep us grateful forever. So proud of her! She will make a wonderful teacher was seen today! Language was no bar! Her kindness and patience was so touching.

In an effort to share the little I know, Kajal from Koshish deaf school Mumbai and I made an effort to bring the teachers of the school together for a conversation. Sharing the process of speech and language development and also just to understand why one needs it can be a long call. The teachers shared their thoughts and also challenges they face with the students and parents. I supported them with the answers and I think it was good to be able to bring everyone on the same page…to make the children speak and talk. In the future we hope to have more conversations and problem solving sessions so that we are empowered to teach the kids to speak. The session made the teachers more open and they shared their struggles and examples from life in school. Every step forward is a support to the community. Looking forward to more meaningful interaction.

Today was another wonderful conversation opportunity which happened unplanned. My visit to Baroda was just a holiday but I got invited to talk to teachers and then grade 9 and 10 students over 4 batches! Addressing over 380 students and also teachers was quite challenging considering the size of the groups and also the age when they don’t sit still. So glad that I could make these conversations to motivate them to work on their future selves, change mindset and also find some good in these talks using our story as an example. The response was overwhelming! The feedback was so touching and I shall go through them in details and share later. Prisha shared her part of the story and together it created a positive impact. I have been asked by the school to come back for to create workshops to support students and teachers. I hope to continue this in future as this is the least we can do to return towards the larger good of the community. I feel humbled and blessed to experience this. Never thought we would be able to touch lives this way.

I was invited by the director of the school to see the possibilities of sharing my work and see the possibilities of some collaborative possibilities. Since I do these conversations and workshops to raise awareness in areas where children are involved, I get excited about talking to educators specially in early years. I also like to use my time positively and contribute in some way to the community. We talked of possibilities while I am here and just a round of the school led to me talking to the elementary school coordinator. As we exchanged ideas and I shared my body of work, she stopped me and asked if I could share this with her preprimary teachers who were discussing their challenges with early years!! I immediately accepted and it was such a good opportunity to share my thoughts, strategies and also answer their queries. What I thought would just be opening a door to a possibility turned into a full hour of session which the teachers found extremely helpful. Prisha was recording and she found everyone engaged and taking notes or voice recordings. So grateful for these opportunities that help me start focused on my mission- raising awareness on early years! I learnt about the struggle of the teachers, the challenges and found ways to help break down the importance of early years. I feel happy that the experience I gained through my life journey helps me to use it positively and this comes more as a passion than a profession! Looking forward to more next week! Life always has doors waiting to be opened. Thank you to Alaka ma that I can do this. It fuels my soul. 🧿✨

A mom of 2 cochlear implanted kids reached out. What hurts me most is the helplessness of the mom since she did not get the right guidance besides not being as hands on the 2nd one. Helping deaf children to speak isn’t easy. The mom has to go through a lot. House work, family pressures, taboo, other chores and finances can make it so challenging. I saw her face drop as I talked to her helping her realize the gaps she has for her 6.5 year old. Trying to create a support system and see how much I can do online and rest in real time. Why don’t the cochlear implant companies have a fool proof system where once implanted the kids get all the support and speech therapy which is most crucial!! The implant that her daughter has taken away her residual hearing and doesn’t give her much help. With such limited speech life can be so hard. Hope the system had better measures. Young lives suffer when doctors just do such a job. The family paid and got the kids implanted after being promised but results are missing. Who is accountable?
