Oxytocin serves many functions. One being initiating uterine contractions. This, obviously, brings babies to earth.
But oxytocin doesn’t stop flowing once the baby is born, and in fact it MUST continue to surge to ensure the uterus releases the placenta and then begins to firm up, shrink in size and clot sufficiently to prevent excessive bleeding.
oxytocin is a shy hormone. she flees at the first disruption or in any situation of panic or fear. and artificial oxytocin has NADA on the real deal. in fact, artificial oxytocin (pictocin) CAUSES postpartum hemorrhage. so your best bet is to work with your body’s natural source of this amazing hormone.
after the baby is born, oxytocin comes in oceans and continues when mamas hold their babies on their naked chests immediately after birth. when they smell their heads, kiss their bodies and bathe in the cosmic love of mother and child, mamas not only feel good (and so does everyone else in the room!) they are also being protected on a physiological level, as oxytocin does its work of finalizing the birth process by helping the placenta shear away, be birthed and clamp down, thus ensuring mama doesn’t lose too much blood.
this is but one example of why undisturbed births and immediate postpartum halos are absolutely crucial to optimal mother + baby outcomes. when the hormones flow as they are meant to, the reality sinks in that birth itself isn’t risky, it is inherently safe and intelligent and has gone to great lengths to ensure women not only survive, they THRIVE in their newfound power and holiness. . 🙏🏼 ✨ 🦋
