From the slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains of Moon in Uganda, Caffe River and NUCAFE under Omukwano initiative brings to your closest connection in Copenhagen, Denmark as well as Italy and Romania the first Geographical Indication (G.I) based Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Coffee. It boldly presents itself with Raspberry, Hazelnut and blacktea notes which standout but uniquely traceable to the spectular culture and landscapes of the people of Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda. Now as the first protected G.I of Uganda as the "Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Coffee", it is wonderfully enjoyable as you get directly, socially and environmentally responsible with the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon farmers at the river banks of Copenhagen, Denmark.

The many steps of this trip have finally brought us here in Kampala, Uganda's capital city, where NUCAFE team has arranged a meeting with representatives from several farmers' communities with whom we have worked with throughout the years - people of diverse ethnicities, geographic origin, religion and customs, but who all share dedication to and respect for their land and the fruits it bears, and which NUCAFE assists in their development and innovation.

These improvements echo throughout a whole value chain: from sowing to tasting, every ring in this chain benefits from the sustainability, the ethics and the quality of its processes, in the evermore clear necessity to maintain these core principles. A necessity which Caffè River and NUCAFE are continuously focusing on.

We left to Italy the following morning, with new experiences and an ever stronger will to promote the fruits of The Omukwano Partnership.

Coming down from the school in Mount Gessi, we quickly leave the mountain behind us through the bridge we are helping to build to grant the community a safe passage across the river. An unusual visit awaits us: the Banyatereza Sisters. We have been buying coffee from these nuns for years, and we were surprised to see how energetic they are.

Welcomed into their convent in Fort Portal, we are stunned by the sight of a "Banyatereza Sisters"-branded pickup truck. They lead the way by driving through the disconnected roads among villages and volcanic craters, until finally reaching their plantations: great models of tidiness, just like their convent.
Truly an unforgettable visit.

We've finally arrived in Karangura, deep into the Rwenzori mountains - the "Mountains of the Moon", some six kilometres away from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is where our new "Karangura Peak is cultivated, a wugar (Washed UGandan ARabica) of outstanding quality which has entered our Closest Connection line of coffee bags. This product is the result of work, ethics and visions of farmers and our friends of NUCAFE, who made it possible for them to protect their brand and geographic origin.

Heading further West, we cross leave the borders of the constitutent kingdom of Buganda and enter the region of Ankole, towards Sheema: here we meet Kagango's farmers association, one of the many local communities connected to NUCAFE throughout Uganda. Communities which NUCAFE contributes to emancipate. Kagango's association focuses on growing coffee of Robusta variety, with washed processing method.
At this point the journey takes a turn for the north, towards the vast natural area of the Rwenzori mountains, a remote location of landscapes reknown for their beauty, their great faunistic variety and - of course - amazing coffee cultures of the Arabica variety.

The second day begins with a visit to farms and plants in Kalangala, Bugala island, with NUCAFE delivering social premiums to the local farmers.
We later cross the island by heading west to reach the lakeport village of Bugoma, where another ferry takes us back to the mainland. From here we venture further into the inland, with Masaka as our new destination. And it is farmers from Masaka that we meet here, closing the day with more awards issued by the National Union of Coffee Agribusinesses.

Many landscapes, sceneries, realities merging and crossing paths, and the journey has just begun.

We are in Entebbe, Uganda.

It was once the country's capital city, and it retains much of its importance to this day: besides landing, it is here one can sail from towards the islands of the majestic lake Victoria - the largest body of water in the whole african continent.

And it is here that we meet our friends of the NUCAFE team (National Union of Coffee Agribusinesses and Farm Enterprises), who jump on board with us to Kalangala, to the Ssese insular archipelago.

Der fornyes i Kampala den årlige Omukwano-aftale!
Til trods for den besværlige periode, sammen med NUCAFE ønsker vi at give et tegn på håb ved at underskrive den årlige kontrakt, som involverer 600+ familier af kaffefarmere i Uganda i vores projekt "Omukwano", så at de kan få deres indsats retfærdigt belønnet.

Godt gået, og tak alle sammen!

Det er et privilegie at kunne smage Shirleys høst; den kommer fra de planter, som hun dyrker med stor passion lige under Andesbjergernes svimlende højder, og tæt på Amazonas regnskovs grænser.
I Februar måned mødte vi Shirley og hendes forældre - alle sammen kaffefarmere – under en fresk tropisk regn i den skønne Selva Central (centraleskov) i Peru.
Høstens kaffetyper er catuaì og caturra, fully-washed metode, BIO- og UTZ certifikat, og smager udmærket. I slutningen af Oktober skal kaffen sejle fra Callao/Limas havn og ankomme hos os i December: det glæder vi os til.

Blandt de mange jordskred som regnen har forårsaget, kommer vi til det sidste stop i vores rejse gennem kaffeplantager i Perus Selva Central.

Vi har besøgt kooperativet ”Villa Rica Golden Coffee”, i Villa Rica; et roligt bjergsted og et vigtigt område for kaffeproduktion. Kooperativets direktør – den unge og energiske Paul Quezada – og medarbejdere har guidet os rundt i deres kaffemarker.

Vi tager nu hjem igen efter eventyret gennem Selva Central er slut, men i fremtiden vil vi sikkert genopleve det enhver gang vi drikker en kop af Perus kaffe :D

Rejsen igennem Peru går videre!

Tusind tak til “Juan Santos Atahualpa”-kooperativet i Pichanaki, til Juan Carlos Rivas og hans medarbejdere, bl.a. vores guide Jean Piert.
Tak også til Shirley fra Colonia Huanca-bjerget for at have vist os sin plantage, fuld af grønne kaffebønner – i en forfriskende tropisk regnvejrsdag.

Vi takker Yudith, Dario og resten af Sanchez-familie for at have vist os deres store kærlighed til kaffe (og for at værdsætte vores lille gave, en pakke Caffè River t-shirts). De 70 medlemmer af Rosas Pampa Sanchez-kooperativet dyrker deres kaffe i Rosas Pampa-området – som ligger to timers kørsel Øst for Satipo, i Perus centrale skovlandskab, cirka 1400 metre over havets overflade. I området findes der flere forskellige slags kaffe, bl.a. Caturra.

Høsten begynder snart, og vi ser meget frem til at smage 2020s produktion.
En virkeligt spændende dag.

Vi er stolte af at præsentere Afrikas eco-friendly kaffe. Et miljøbæredygtigt projekt fremmet af NUCAFE – vores partner i The Omukwano Partnership i Uganda – som har gjort det muligt at oprette en solgård på stedet; dette vil hjælpe små producenter til at reducere produktionsomkostninger af grøn kaffe op til 40%. En smart initiativ, som tager udgangspunkt i bæredygtighed med hensyn til klimaforandring.

Bæredygtighed og lav miljøpåvirkning med hensyn til klimaforandring: disse er kaffeproduktionens særlige karakteristikker i Costa Rica, ifølge Paola Vega, som er medlem af det grønne Citizen Action Party.

Costa Ricas regering har faktisk anerkendt kaffe som nationalt symbol d. 20. Januar - på grund af dens rolle i landets økonomi og samfundsudvikling - og har opfordret Undervisningsministeriet til at lægge mere vægt på produktets vigtighed i de relaterede studieprogrammer.

En flot overraskelse fra folket i Bufumbo!

I det første billede vises der Caffè Rivers fremlæggelsestale ved åbningseventet af Madenge Health Center – med underskrifter fra alle deltagere.

Klinikken er blevet opført igennem ”Omukwano” – et samarbejde mellem Caffè River, NUCAFE og kaffefarmeres forening i Bufumbo :)
