The Essence of Traditional Thai Massage
In truth, massage is the act of creating movement within the water in our cells, the water between cells, and the water in our blood vessels and lymphatic vessels. Altogether, this water accounts for about 70 percent of the body’s mass. If a person weighs 100 kilograms, the total amount of water in the body weighs around 70 kilograms.
If the body does not move, or is unable to move, and we do not assist it through massage, the circulation of water within the body will not function as well as it should. Without such assistance, circulation becomes impaired, leading to pain, stiffness in the joints, and limited mobility. This occurs because excess water accumulates in the intercellular spaces due to poor circulation.
Massage, therefore, stimulates the movement of bodily fluids and helps restore normal circulation—especially microcirculation—which is essentially the movement of life itself.
The skin, which acts as the outer covering of the body, prevents excessive loss of bodily fluids. It also has another important function: it is rich in sensory nerves. When the skin is touched, sensory signals are transmitted to the brain, helping activate brain cells and sustain vitality.
Therefore, if we understand the essence of massage and keep our mind focused with mindfulness, wisdom, and wholesome intention, channeling these qualities to the person receiving the massage, our massage will be profoundly effective. It becomes not only a physical therapy that stimulates the movement of life, but also a source of joy, serenity, and nourishment for the heart and mind.
