During Mental Health week, some of us may be thinking a little more about our own mental health, worrying about family members, supporting staff at work or thinking about what team initiatives might be needed.
But have you thought about what 'good' mental health is? How it feels? The truth is, so many people really don't feel good at all but it's become 'normal' to feel exhausted, slightly overwhelmed, anxious and just get through the day until you can collapse with a glass of wine or a pack of biscuits and Netflix.
Chances are, feeling good means something quite different to each of us but as a somatic therapist and as a woman, I've found it really helpful to slightly adapt the Huberman Lab's 'Big Six' criteria for mental and emotional health as there are some ways in which we need to specifically support women's health and wellbeing
The 'Big Seven' are:
1. Adequate Sleep
2. Movement
3. Diet - food and nutrition
4. Light exposure (how much natural light we get daily, and when)
5. Community
6. Stress - our capacity for what life throws at us
7. Menstrual Cycle Awareness & support
'Mental' health isn't only about what we do for the mind - talk therapy, leadership coaching, meditation and mindset strategies are all beneficial but in order to thrive, we need to be doing 'well enough' in all 7 areas.
How we live, breathe, move, digest, manage and mitigate stress; how we think, work and play all comes down to whether our gut-brain connection is online and our body is ABLE to move and breathe. So much of this is Nervous System regulation.
Over the past 5 years, I've been developing and refining a really simple 7-day program to support women to RESTORE.
For 7 Days, we use food as medicine, simplify your schedule, and support your WHOLE body health so you feel lighter, brighter and so much more like YOU! The online course is self-led, the meal plan is super simple.
It's tried, it's tested and it WORKS. Because we're working with our body, mind and spirit as parts of a whole, living, breathing, moving woman in her busy life.
