My meditation practice actually began with a rather unexpected goal: learning how to stand on my head 🙃
When I was writing my master’s thesis in English literature, I discovered how helpful it was to close my laptop and retreat to the campus prayer/meditation room – and simply stand on my head.
Often, I would also close my eyes and “meditate”, even though I didn’t fully realise at the time that this was what I was doing 🤭
But it worked.
About 20 minutes later, I would return to my desk with a clear mind, ready to write a new paragraph or wrestle with yet another dense text on postmodernism or quantum theory and mechanics 🧠
For me, then, headstands and meditation have since been intertwined 🧘♀️ Entangled, if you like 😉
When practising a headstand (whether supported by a chair like this one, or on the floor – which is much harder), the focus is entirely on maintaining balance.
There’s little room for the so-called monkey mind. In many ways, it resembles focusing on a mantra or a visualisation in the mind’s eye – just expressed through the body 🤸♀️
