This week I got to nerd out doing a talk on enrichment and why it's something we have to think about for our equine friends. πŸ’š and of course I couldn't show up without the tea selection box from Finer Forage 🌱🌾🌿☘️

I had a brief training session with Sheil today. To finetune some of our queues ready for next weekend.

Which got me thinking... Sheil can always say no to me. She trusts that I don't force her to train or take part.

But how do we know our horses trust us. πŸ€” what do you think trust looks like to a horse?

First week of 2024 done how are we all doing.?

Today Sheil and I started our agility training ready for our next competition 🀣🀞✨️

I feel so lucky and privileged to still have her with me. A year ago she was struggling with severe breathing difficulties and got diagnosed with severe and acute asthma.

This winter we have had barely any breathing issues and we are prepared if she's starting to show signs again.

She is the love of my life and she makes me laugh everyday.

I have attached a brief video of her antics. (Read: didn't go to plan) 🀣❀️

Hope you all enjoy the little moments with your equine friends.

Happy New Year to all my lovely friends and clients and a special thank you to Understand Horses and Justine Harrison - Equine Behaviourist ❀️πŸ₯³

I don't do New Year resolutions, but I have a really exciting 2024 planned, which hopefully I get to share with a lot of you.

Thank you for being part of this crazy roller coaster which is also known as life.

I do promise that in 2024 I will continue to grow, continue to learn, I will continue to teach to those who will listen, I will love hard, laugh loud, I will probably have to dig myself out of a few lows and I will continue to fight for what I believe is right.

I recently posted about enrichment and what it actually means in terms of the word. This is a fantastic idea for your equine friends.

I have used this method with all my equids (zebras, donkeys, rhinos and ponies)

I use finer forage with Sheil and Sheil has helped develop the aaannnddd breathe herbs for asthma.

I have seen a lot of different horses in my time and just as many owners.

But the thing that stands out is what type of owner you are in the winter when the light disappears and the warm nights are few and far apart.

So my question is: why do you have horses??

Wow time is flying. So many things are happening behind the scenes. (Watch this space) I'm currently treating competition horses in Denmark. With the change in weather and the sudden cold loads of horses are experiencing muscle tension and stress particularly in the neck, shoulders and the the hip. Equine Massage Therapy releases the tension and promotes healthy muscles and tissue elasticity.

A few photos from yesterday's horses.

Well said Justine Harrison - Equine Behaviourist I cannot believe she was cleared of all charges.

We need to ask, if this had been a dog would the charges have been different?

I would never let her anywhere near my horse or my children.

Why would anyone chose "discipline" as a first response to a frightened animal. She claims she used the appropriate amount of discipline... according to who? Who has agreed what is okay and when is it ever okay. And why would we discipline an animal in the first place for running away after being frightened on the road, they are NOT machines.

I can only hope we as humans will do better in the future as we seem to constantly let down the animals around us. πŸ’”

Sarah Moulds also criticises the RSPCA, saying it was "pressured" to prosecute by "online bullies".

I'm back from holiday, but may be a little slow at responding to messages. Unfortunately my rescue dog Nya of 7 years experienced a very sudden illness and we unfortunately had to put her to sleep earlier this week. This has taken its toll on me, my family and my other dog George who's whole world has collapsed. πŸ’”

WHEN IS ENRICHMENT NOT ENRICHING?

On 2 July at UNDERSTAND HORSES LIVE 2023 Barbara Dreyer-Rowlands will be presenting a workshop looking at whether enrichment strategies are actually working or not.

In the last few years, enrichment has become a more routine part of many horse’s lives. There are a wide range of enrichment items or boredom busters in most horse shops, and horse owners have been getting creative with their own enrichment ideas. However, we need to know whether these enrichment items are doing what they should. Are they actually enriching our horse’s lives? Are they helping to promote a more diverse range of behaviours? Do they cause frustration or are they just ignored?

In this workshop Barbara will take a critical look at enrichment to understand what we are achieving with our enrichment devices through objective observation and behaviour measurement.

Understand Horses Live is a unique equine event – 2 days of lectures plus practical demos & training workshops on horse behaviour, physiology and training. You can find out more about the event and book tickets here: https://www.understandhorses.com/understand-horses-live
