On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court revoked the constitutional right to an abortion, overruling nearly half a century of precedence. Make no mistake: this decision is a clear violation of bodily autonomy. The Court has opted to force births when a family may not be able to safely or responsibly raise a child, to drastically increase rates of child poverty and of infanticide, to mandate people to carry a fetus to term even if it kills them, and to – in sum – strip away individuals’ rights to their own bodies.
The choice to have or not have an abortion is entirely personal, and it is a choice that should be made between a patient and their doctor alone. Even in situations entirely unrelated to family planning, abortions are a lifesaving form of healthcare – for cases like ectopic pregnancies, treatments for some cancers, emergent surgeries, and countless other medical crises. The government has no business regulating citizens’ medical decisions.
Almost 50 years ago, the Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that the United States Constitution generally protects an individual’s right to an abortion – and while this decision did not bring about immediate and universal reproductive justice, it was a critical step in advancing rights for people of all sexes. But now, we are witnessing a regression in civil liberty that will have – and is already having – deadly consequences.
Already, nine U.S. states have banned all or nearly all abortions, most of which offer no exceptions whatsoever for r**e or in**st. At least 12 more states are almost certainly set to follow suit, affecting a total of 26.6 million women of reproductive age as well as some transgender men and non-binary individuals.
We cannot stand idly by while 30 million people are robbed of their basic rights. The most effective way to support reproductive rights at present is to donate to local abortion funds and independent clinics, especially in high-risk states where – as clinics are forced to shut down – the money will help transport people in need of an abortion to a state in which such lifesaving medical care is still legal (keepourclinics.org).
