Meet Expat Hero Christina!

Christina’s story is a real Expat Hero’s story about turning a turbulent international journey into a leap of faith in our own internal power!

As a Danish career woman accompanying her husband abroad she found herself unable to pick up her career in her new home country and searched for something meaningful to do.

As a trained lawyer she set out with an idea of joining the corporate world but soon found that balancing the integration of two young kids along side a partner with obligations to the sending corporation was not a healthy combination 😅

That’s when Christina began looking for a project for her to do!

As in every good expat story new friends game along and one in particular encouraged Christina to embark in a creative project. That reminded Christina of a self-made Christmas story she used to tell her kids at bedtime every December.

A Danish tradition in many families all through December is to have Elf’s visit and play little tricks with everything from colouring the milk blue to painting the toenails of the kids while sleeping 🤭

When she looked around in Canada where she lived she couldn’t find that same tradition - 🧚🏽‍♀️ there was her purpose!

Bringing her old Christmas fairytale to live for the joy of international kids growing up away from home or English speaking kids growing up in Denmark unfamiliar with that sweet tradition.

As she dived into her memory the story game back to life and after 9 months of writing, editing, illustrating and colouring the story game to life 🎄

25 chapters full of Elfie’s adventures, tricks, fun and thoughtful moments.

Danish Christmas tradition in English 🎅🏽🤶🏼🧑🏾‍🎄

is for kids all ages but in particular brings joy to 3-9 year old children and their parents.

You can buy the beautiful Christmas Calendar Fairytale directly at the web shop www.elfiesjourney.com or at or or visit Christina when open their doors to their Christmas market on Friday December 1st 🎄❄️

Today I answer one of the most common questions I get at Expat Hero: How a process in therapy or counseling with me takes place.

It’s a valid question to ask in order to understand how your therapist works and what is expected of you.

Apart from the practicalities I always stress that “chemistry” comes before “methodology”.

Today there are more than 400 registered therapeutic directions. Many rests on the same fundamental understanding of human psychology, but there are of course important variations and it can be extremely difficult to choose what might be the right choice for you.

That’s why I recommend you always make a “chemistry” check with your therapist. And if you come to see me and you don’t feel I’m the right match I support you finding a better match among the many highly skilled therapists in my network.

If you have any questions, please remember that I am just a phone call away.

15/10/2023

A new country means new ways of being in the world. It takes time to adapt and find yourself in all the newness. You might have been prepared for the national culture and its “dos and don’ts.”

But what about work?

Your relationship with “how to work” will also undergo a cultural adaptation process, and often we tend to forget how overwhelming that aspect of expat life can be.

Diving into a new work culture requires yet another level of attentiveness and inner balance, as your whole purpose for having moved yourself (and your accompanying partner/family) is on the line.

Many of my clients experience an additional level of stress the first couple of years after their international move because performance at work is at the top of the list. Finding work-life balance is crucial for your mental health and family well-being.

Depending on what type of work culture you come from, the new ways of working might provoke a lot of confusion, stress, and even anxiety. Avoiding burnout is crucial - and can even add to the pressure you feel.

EXAMPLE: Danish work culture is known for having “LOW POWER DISTANCE.” It means that the hierarchy is flat, and you can knock on your boss' door anytime or have lunch sitting next to the CEO. BUT in most organizations, there is still a strong power structure that plays out in subtle ways, and that can be confusing, especially if you come from a work culture with clear hierarchy and “HIGH POWER DISTANCE.”

ADVICE: Meet organizational and team cultures with a lot of curiosity and ask for help to understand the subtle cues embedded in the organizational culture. Ask for transparency. Be transparent yourself by letting your colleagues and leader know that you are trying to decode the cultural ways of the organization and team in order to adapt faster, and not because you are critical of “their ways.”

If you feel overwhelmed and are experiencing signs of stress, please make sure to reach out to get the support you need to thrive. Secure and smooth onboarding into the organization must be a priority, and since we all have tons of cultural “blind spots,” the most well-meaning colleagues, leaders, and HR departments might still overlook that you are struggling to navigate the changes.

At Expat Hero, we support both international employees and leaders of diverse teams.

Don’t hesitate to reach out if you need our support.
