We are incredibly proud to share that RE:COLLECTION has been selected as one of 11 Spotlighted Projects at Cannes Docs 2026, part of the Marché du Film at the Festival de Cannes. 🔥

The film is currently in early production, and we’ll be presenting the project to the international documentary community this May.

Grateful to the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa (NFVF) for their support.

On the 23rd of March 2026 the remains of 63 Khoi, San, Nama, Griqua and Korana ancestors were laid to rest at Kinderlê in Namaqualand. They had been stored in museums in Cape Town and Glasgow for over 100 years since they were taken from their graves across the Northern Cape in South Africa.
The ancestors could not be returned to where they had been buried, because the scientists who took them did not record this information. They were reduced to specimens to be studied.

While the reburial cannot undo what was done, it is an effort to rehumanise and remember.

re:collection tells the story of why they were taken and the difficult journey of restoration and reburial.

Chief Petrus Vaalbooi is 81 years old and has led the ‡Khomani San since 2018. His activism began decades earlier, as part of the successful efforts to reclaim ancestral land in the Kalahari. For years, he has fought for the return of his ancestors’ remains - stolen from their graves, studied, and held in museums far from home.

MED CINE's film: re:collection - follows this ongoing journey of return.

A respected elder and spiritual leader, Petrus works to restore knowledge systems and dignity for his people, who continue to face marginalisation.. He moves between worlds, challenging formal structures while remaining deeply rooted in the spirit of the land.

He invited us to witness the return of the ancestors.

This is the first in our new episode format: ARC Interviews — conversations with people whose stories and work challenge the way we see the world.

We begin with Brain Miennies — community leader, activist, and a key voice in Unburied. After sharing the episodes of Unburied with Brain, we sat down with him to reflect on the series, the ongoing struggle for the repatriation of Indigenous ancestors, and why this work is about more than returning bones. It’s about forgotten history, dignity, and ultimately— justice.
