Greetings to all from Place of Hope/Lugar de Esperanza. We have a bit of catching up to do on our happenings.

A big thank you and hug goes to Deb Angus for donating April’s proceeds of the Thrift Store to us. The $453.00 will provide food for 2.5 weeks, approximately 700 meals. We are currently providing around 200-250 meals a week. Deb & Dan do so much for all the local foundations here in Cotacachi.

One of our elders, Gonzalo, had his glasses stolen, so we thought we could help him get a new pair. We instructed him to go see the Optomologist Paulina Proana at Golden Vision Optica on Calle Bolivar here in Cotacachi. Not only did she provide his exam at no cost but gave a very nice discount on his new glasses. It really is wonderful how local people help us to make someone’s life a bit better. Her kind heart is truly appreciated.

Another big thanks goes to Bill & Ann Henry for setting up an account for us at Luis’ Store in Cotacachi on 10 de Agosto. At the store we can get staple items such as rice, lentils, etc. We truly appreciate your kindness in supporting our project.

In other news: This week we had a student from Las Lomos school help out at the kitchen as part of her studies. Next week we will have another student volunteering also. We enjoy sharing our project with the younger generation. Hopefully it will inspire future efforts in helping people in need.

Congratulations to Shades of Grey Matter for their trivia win yesterday!!! We had 7 teams compete, totaling 34 players. What a great time had by all!! We raised $295 for Place of Hope and another $235 for the family of Maria Olga to help with her medical costs. A big thank you to everyone that came to support us, have some fun, and laughs.

A big kudos goes to Coo Coo’s Nest restaurant for the impeccable service, great food, and donation. This was our first time hosting Trivia and we could not have asked for a better location to hold this event. We can’t wait for the next one!!!

Feliz Pascuas/Happy Easter to all from Place of Hope/Lugar de Esperanza. Easter here in Cotacachi, Ecuador is one of the most important times of year. One of the most delicious traditions is a dish called Fanesca. Last Friday, April 11, our elders enjoyed this traditional meal made by our wonderful cooks, Veronica Guaman and Veronica Guajan. 68 servings were served 🥣

Fanesca is an Ecuadorian soup that is served country wide throughout the six weeks of Lent. The 12 “grains” used to make it include a combination of beans and vegetables that represent the 12 apostles of Jesus. The salted fish, which can be cod or mackerel, represents Jesus (fish is an ancient Christian symbol).

Some of our elders contributed to the Fanesca meal. They donated beans, corn, milk, and other needed ingredients. One of our voluteers attempted to make the little fried flour balls that garnishes the soup/stew but in the end had to have the help from our cooks to figure out the recipe and successfully make them 💕

There are other ways you can become part of this wonderful group. Please consider becoming part of our donation family. Without the help of our donors none of this would be possible. You can use the link below to make a secure donation through PayPal. Thank you in advance for considering to help our breakfast program.

For those of you who live here in Cotacachi, if you see Heidi Small, Susan Bussey, or Chuck Bussey out and about in town you can always give them a donation as well.

News from Place of Hope

Today we received a message from Andres Granja, our friend at JetBlue.
A very large package was waiting for us at Servientrega in Cotacachi. Inside were donations from the JetBlue team in Guayaquil.

They sent lots of tuna, rice, oats, pasta, lentils, beans, barley, máchica (for thickening the colada drink), and bullion. And there was a very sweet note signed by each of those who donated.

This donation will help with our meals for the next few weeks, and we are very grateful for your donation.

We love you, JetBlue! Thank you so much!

February 2025 has come to an end. It has been business as usual at Place of Hope. This weekend is Carnaval here in Ecuador. This is a major holiday for Ecuador as it celebrates excess and abundance just ahead of Catholic Lent that introduces sobriety and prudence. Carnaval in Ecuador also honors the indigenous Kichwa holiday of Paucar Huatay, end of the solar year. There will be many parades and festivities this weekend and we can’t wait to enjoy some of the fun!

In other news we had a visit from some of the medical staff that works for the Municipal of Cotacachi. They approached us to see if they could provide some basic medical assistance and of course we said yes. Their first morning was on February 20th and they attended to approximately 50 elders. The following Wednesday, Feb 26th was their second visit. Each elder went in a rotation for a general health check of blood pressure, weight, and illness review. Some received an order they could take to the public hospital to receive medications. A physical & occupational therapy assessment along with a psychology interview were also provided.

We want to give a big thank you and our deepest gratitude to the Municipal of Cotacachi for reaching out to us and providing this service free of charge. It truly is a beneficial and wonderful thing to do for our elders here in Cotacachi, Ecuador.

As always we can’t say thank you enough to all our donors and voluteers who help our program. Without your generosity we could not continue to keep our doors open. You all are the best and so very appreciated ❤️

Greetings from Place of Hope/Lugar de Esperanza. We have started our new year and look forward to our continued progress in providing nutritional meals to one of the most vulnerable populations here in Cotacachi, Ecuador, indigenous elders. Now that our holiday’s are over we are back to serving 300-350 meals per week. For many this will be the only substantial meal they have for the day.

We would like to give a big hug and thanks to Deb Angus who donated a portion of December’s proceeds from the Coo Coo’s Nest Thrift store to our program. For many years now Deb has helped so many here in Cotacachi and we can’t thank her enough.

In other news:

Our buildings that we use here in the Barrio San Jose, Cotacachi, have not had any updates done in 10yrs. The dilapidated condition of our exterior walls really became noticeable when work had been done to the building next to us in San Jose. We reached out to Manuel Javita, owner of SU FERRETERIA on Calle Bolivar, who comes from San Jose, to help us with some work. Our exterior walls were resurfaced, the gate entrance was replaced with wider columns, and a new concrete slab was poured to help with water issues to the building next to us. All of this work was completed in 5 days for the cost of $700.00. As many of you know we are a very small organization with a budget of less than 20k per year. We would be very grateful for any help in covering some of the expense for the much needed repairs and updates that were completed. You can use the PayPal link below or if you see, Heidi Small, Susan Bussey, or Chuck Bussey out on the streets in Cotacachi, you can give them a in person donation. Thanks in advance for your kindness and generosity.

On the fun and artistic side: One of our elders, Alfonso, made a scarf, created a medal, and made 2 decorations from plastic cups and streamers for our president. It was kind of a red carpet moment as he wanted to have a presentation and of course photos had to be taken. He has created several works of art around the property and we just love it. Alfonso is a gentle and kind soul with a sweet heart.

What a special morning we had today!!! Coo Coo’s Nest Restaurant provided our elders with their absolutely delicious pernil sandwiches today 😋🥰. Everyone was so happy to receive this special meal. Not only did they bring the food, that included a delectable chocolate cake with a strawberry topping, they worked to serve everyone 😊.

Our deepest gratitude for thinking of us and providing such an incredible meal ❤️. A truly great and kind hearted group of people.

We also hear they will have the pernil sandwich on their menu as a special this week. We can all attest to how yummy they are!!!
