Election commission’s decision to change election dates based on a weather forecast sparks an uproar

While the National Electoral Council defends its decision to bring forward regional elections from February 14, 2027 to November 29, 2026, some critics are calling it an “act against democracy.” “This is the responsible thing to do,” CNE president Diana Atamaint said Friday, following the commission’s decision to reschedule the election for mayors, prefects and local boards and commissions. “The National Risk Management advises us that the country faces a very strong El Niño weather system next year, with heavy rain and possible flooding, and changing the dates assures us of conducting a smooth and fair election.”...

In the fight to defend the Ecuadorian Amazon, this Indigenous community’s secret weapon is science

By Katie Surma By the time Olger Kitiar reached the ridge, his shirt was wet with sweat, clinging to his back. Built with the solid frame of a linebacker, he moved through the rainforest with a quick, even rhythm that defied the steep, slick climb. Then he froze. “Stop,” he hissed in Spanish, his hand snapping up. Jhostin Antún, a few steps behind, halted mid-stride....

Border crossing between Colombia and Ecuador reopens after a 19-day protest

Traders and transport operators have suspended a 19-day blockade at the Rumichaca International Bridge, the primary land crossing between Colombia and Ecuador. The protest, prompted by a 50% tax imposed by the Ecuadorian government on Colombian goods, was lifted to accommodate travel and commerce during the Semana Santa holiday period. Despite the suspension of the strike, the regional business community reports that significant economic damage and diplomatic tensions persist....

The Cuenca neighborhood that doesn’t exist

The first time I saw “Gringolandia” listed as a neighborhood in Cuenca, I assumed I had missed a municipal announcement. Perhaps the city council had quietly created a new parish, drawn a few boundaries along the river, and installed a sign somewhere official-looking. It seemed unlikely, but cities do change, and one learns not to dismiss these things too quickly....

Have humans passed peak brain power? Why we’re losing our ability to concentrate and to think clearly

By Cal Newport Mr. Newport is a professor of computer science at Georgetown University and the author of “Deep Work.” Today we take for granted that diet and exercise are vitally important for our health and well-being. But we didn’t always think this way. Much of this awareness emerged in a remarkably short time during the middle of the last century....

Indigenous women tour Ecuador oil field as warning against Amazon drilling expansion

By Steven Grattan Standing beside a stream stained dark with oil in Ecuador’s northern Amazon, an Indigenous woman shook her head in disbelief as she stared at the oily sheen drifting across the water and broken pipes cutting through the forest. Nearby, gas flares burned above the treetops. Julia Catalina Chumbi, a 76-year-old leader from the Shuar ethnic group in the southern Amazon province of Pastaza, had traveled hundreds of miles to see the damage for herself — the legacy of decades of oil and gas production in the northeastern province of Sucumbios....

Ecuador denies media reports that the bombing of a farm near the Colombian border was a ‘PR stunt’

Ecuador’s Defense Ministry claimed Thursday that international news media reports critical of a March 3 bombing raid on a farm near the Colombian border were “a gross distortion the facts.” Although the bombing raid was carried out by the Ecuadorian military, the target was identified by United States military intelligence. According to a joint statement by the ministry and the U.S....

ITA Cocina Diversa: A restaurant built on the decision to come home to Cuenca

Some of the most interesting restaurants begin with a question rather than a business plan. For Paula, who is from Cuenca, and Wilmo, originally from Loja, that question appeared during a visit back to Ecuador in 2023. At the time they were living abroad, but returning home raised a possibility they could not ignore. Should they continue building their lives outside Ecuador, or was it time to come home and build the restaurant they had always imagined?...

All that glitters

There are moments in history when the world’s accountants quietly rearrange the furniture and everyone else spends the next fifty years living with the consequences. One of those moments took place in July 1944 in a grand old resort hotel in the mountains of New Hampshire called Bretton Woods. The Second World War was still raging. Germany was fighting for survival, Japan still controlled much of Asia, and yet representatives of forty-four allied nations gathered at the Mount Washington Hotel to discuss a problem that would arrive the morning after victory: how to rebuild the global economy without repeating the disasters of the 1930s....

The rise of the ‘expat economy’ as Westerners are fleeing their home countries in record numbers

By Callum Williams After stepping down as New Zealand’s prime minister in 2023, Jacinda Ardern took up a role at Harvard University. Now she is based in Sydney. Ms Ardern’s decision to live abroad has struck a nerve with Kiwis, who were already worried about high levels of emigration. Anxiety over the former prime minister’s living arrangements hints at a wider trend across the West....

Progress reported in first meeting to resolve conflict between Colombia and Ecuador

The Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and Ecuador say “substantial progress” was made following Wednesday’s meeting to resolve differences between the two countries. The conflict began February 17 when President Daniel Noboa imposed a 30% tariff on most Colombia imports, claiming Colombia had failed to stop the flow of co***ne and drug traffickers across the countries’ common border. Colombia responded with reciprocal tariffs which were boosted to 50% in March....
