This is a visual demonstration of the principle of selective photothermolysis, which is the foundation of modern laser dermatology.

Laser energy is selectively absorbed by the target — in this case, pigment — while surrounding tissues remain unaffected. This is exactly how tattoo removal works: the pigment absorbs the laser energy and breaks down into microscopic particles without damaging the surrounding skin. 

As you can see at the beginning of the video, when the laser pulse is applied to normal skin, there is almost no sensation — because there is no target chromophore to absorb the energy.

However, when the laser hits pigment, the effect is completely different: the particles rapidly absorb the energy and undergo fragmentation, almost like a micro-explosion, breaking into tiny fragments that can later be removed by the body.

This is precision medicine at the microscopic level.
