In the book Madhurya Kadambini, Vishvanatha Chakravarti Thakur describes nine stages of spiritual development and levels of consciousness.
Śraddhā is the first stage of consciousness, founded on beautiful, faith-based trust. At this level there is strong enthusiasm, but it is often accompanied by fanaticism and sentimentalism. A devotee at this stage usually considers their own perspective to be the best. They are not yet able to perceive the deeper dimensions and higher realizations within their own spiritual line — which is natural and, in a way, protective. It helps prevent the mind from becoming too scattered while progressing step by step.
Such a practitioner may be very strict and critical toward those whose views do not align with theirs. Rarely will you hear them say, “Perhaps I do not see the whole picture,” or acknowledge that they are a conditioned soul, also prone to making mistakes. They may enthusiastically use philosophy and scriptural verses according to their level of realization. Yet, on a subtle level, many material qualities can still remain — such as feeling superior to so-called “fallen materialists,” or directing criticism toward others through the energies of resentment and anger.
Ultimately, if we set aside all teachings and philosophies for a moment, as Jesus Christ said, “You will know them by their fruits.” One’s character qualities immediately reflect how deeply one has realized the soul’s natural consciousness of love. If we fail to see this within ourselves, God may give us many signs from the outside — through other living beings who politely keep their distance, leaving us instead with the experience of loneliness and the energy of pride.
