April is Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month! 🧬
📈 Head and neck cancers account for >650,000 new cases and ~330,000 deaths annually worldwide.
🔬 Key clinical insights:
• ~90% are squamous cell carcinomas.
• Major risk factors: to***co, alcohol, HPV (especially HPV-16 in oropharyngeal cancers)
• Rising incidence of HPV-related cancers in younger, non-smoking populations.
⚠️ Red flags not to miss:
• Non-healing oral ulcers (>2 weeks)
• Persistent hoarseness or dysphagia
• Unexplained neck masses
• Erythroplakia / leukoplakia
🩺 What we can do:
• Perform routine oral cavity & neck exams—even in asymptomatic patients
• Promote HPV vaccination as cancer prevention
• Educate patients on modifiable risk factors
• Ensure timely referral for suspicious lesions
📉 Survival is stage-dependent: early-stage disease markedly higher 5-year survival compared to advanced presentations. The biology is aggressive—but the window for interception is real.
As clinicians, our vigilance is not optional—it is lifesaving.
