Cairo University Ocular Oncology Service Ocular oncology involves the study and treatment of tumors that occur in or around the eye.

These tumors can range from harmless to potentially life-threatening, and may cause vision loss or loss of the eye itself.

We are thrilled to share the publication of several of our latest papers!

The first two papers feature the culmination of our work & experience on uveal melanomas and circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas since the inception of our oncology service, and have been published in the prestigious Ocular Oncology and Pathology Journal.

Additionally, under the guidance of our ocular oncology consultants, rising researchers and residents contributed a series of review articles featured in the ocular oncology special issue of the Egyptian Retina Journal.

Endoresection of A Large Choroidal Malignant Melanoma

A 60 year old male patient presented to us with diminution of vision to hand motion in his right pseudophakic eye due to apparent vitreous hemorrhage. The patient had bilateral uneventful phacoemulsification with IOL implantations 4 years ago. Ultrasound of his right eye showed a large polypoidal choroidal mass with low/moderate internal reflectivity suggestive of a choroidal melanoma. The mass grew from 7.33 to 8.23 mm in height in 3 weeks (Figures 1 & 2); dimensions beyond the radiation field of the Ruthenium 106 plaques we use in our center. On his refusal of enucleation, gamma knife radiotherapy with endoresection was scheduled due to the tumor having a relatively small base diameter (6.5mm).

Within one week after his gamma knife radiotherapy session, the patient underwent endoresection of the choroidal melanoma (Figures 3 & 4; intraoperative view).

Ocular ultrasound done post-resection showed a silicone oil filled globe with absent choroidal masses in the resected area (Figure 5).
