Leaky Gut Syndrome: Gut Health and Rheumatoid Arthritis
How the Microbiome Drives Inflammation and Joint Pain: by Dr. Hatem Eleishi
If you’re living with rheumatoid arthritis, you might have heard the term “leaky gut” and wondered what it means—and how it could possibly be connected to your joint pain and inflammation. In this video, we’ll break it all down for you in simple terms and share practical steps you can take to support your gut health and potentially ease your arthritis symptoms.
If the lining of your gut is weakened and becomes leaky for any reason, this allows toxins and bacterial fragments (like LPS) to enter the bloodstream. This can trigger inflammation and contribute to autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis in patients who are susceptible to the disease and can also in make the disease more active in those who already have the disease.
And why would the lining of your gut become leaky? For several reasons:
Number 1: Poor Diet: Certain foods can weaken the gut lining and promote inflammation: Processed foods and sugars, gluten for some people, dairy products only in those who are sensitive to them but not everyone of course, alcohol, artificial Sweeteners.
Number 2: Chronic Stress: stress weakens the immune system and affects gut bacteria balance. So, practice stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.
Number 3: any disturbance to the normal balance of the bacteria that live in your gut (Gut dysbiosis). The solution here is to consume probiotics, prebiotics, and fiber-rich foods to support a healthy gut microbiome.
Number 4: Certain infections (like H. pylori or Candida overgrowth) may contribute.
Number 5: Frequent Use of Medications: as certain types of painkillers and antibiotics.
Number 6: Environmental Toxins & Chemicals: Pesticides, food additives, heavy metals, and pollutants can irritate the gut lining. Also, microplastics & preservatives in processed foods may also contribute. The solution is to choose organic foods, drink filtered water, and reduce exposure to processed chemicals.
