Had a wonderful time over the weekend with my colleague, Dr. Sami Abdullah, giving training to teachers about Hygiene Education in Schools and its relevance.
The training was centered on four main domains of School Hygiene: Classroom hygiene, sanitation, Drinking water, and personal hygiene. I highlighted the problems related to each of them, and the remedial measures.
Understanding the roles of teachers in the lives of learners, especially children, was the main reason for our training. We aim at ensuring the well-being of children especially the refugees.
To me, giving this form of training to teachers, does not only promote healthy learning environments to children, rather, it also provides practical knowledge for teachers to pass to the children who, in most families, play important roles including taking care of their younger siblings. More than that, children are future parents, leaders, and change makers.
I was particularly amazed with the feedback, questions, and concerns from the teachers. The fact that they could easily relate the lesson learned and asked for its extension to children and parents, was a call for community health engagement and interventions.
The feedback received made me realize the profound impact of community health education, and the need to strengthen public health and preventive medicine in underserved communities including refugees.
Together, let's continue pushing the boundaries of health system, seek to identify health issues and trends within a population and work with stakeholders to find solutions to these concerns.
