Why?

The Prefrontal Cortex serves as a "brake" that can slow down and regulate thoughts, emotions and actions. The prefrontal cortex is highly susceptible to chronic stress exposure.

Over time, stress can "release the brake" and allow the Amygdala to override the Prefrontal Cortex, rendering the Prefrontal Cortex weaker and in less control.
