Sweet potatoes full of fiber, not raising the blood sugar as regular potatoes. Sliced and baked with very little olive oil at not more than 180 degree Celsius, to which I add minced dried garlic and Himalayan pink salt. Bon appétit!!

In Sardinia, Italy, there is another blue zone, where men and women advance in age at an equal rate. The first secret for their longevity, like many other blue zone areas, is exercise. These people live on the top of mountains, they have to go up and down every day when they set foot outside their houses. They also have stairs in the streets that take them up and down the way to and from home. They have faith, and go to church each and every day of their lives on foot.
women cook all their lives. They make excellent pasta and bread , all homemade from scratch . So they exert upper body muscle work at home every day. And guess what? That pasta and bread don’t make them fat, don’t increase their blood sugar levels like regular pasta and bread do, because they use whole wheat flour ( Sourdough ) to which a very important probiotic is added( lactobacillus).
They eat lots of beans, and vegetables every day, their main dish is a Minestrone, which they cook with a lot of homemade tomato sauce, olive oil, all the organic vegetables they have and that they grow in their gardens, so they eat delicious food that is full of fiber, boosts the immune system, contributing to their longevity which is initiated by faith, and physical activity .

Daily physical activity is a part of the everyday routine of the adventists of Loma Linda, no matter their age.
So, the older Adventists from this part of the world, practice their daily physical activity in groups. This helps them make always new friends, prevents loneliness, and hence depression.
These people also make a lot of volunteer work. They believe they are God’s apostles on earth, who should do good to others every day in order to honor God as long as they live.
They believe they have a mission that is to have a productive life by serving others, and this makes them happier .
As for the food part, they eat mainly fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, grains, legumes, whereas animal protein consists of only five per cent of their daily caloric intake .

So, let’s go today to another continent! Can you imagine that there is a place in California( USA) that is considered as a blue zone? This is Loma Linda where a 100 years ago, Adventists landed , and they started to build just a church and a hospital. Adventists are very religious, but they link religion and faith to community bonds, they do everything together and their principle is to evangelize through health, and their mission has conquered the whole world.
As for the Loma Linda University hospital built in the 19 th century, it has become one of the most reputable hospitals throughout the world now .
Ellen White is the founder of the Adventist Church in Loma Linda. She started a movement in the middle of the 19th century , where she educated people on the global significance of health , stating that it is of utmost importance be equally physically and mentally healthy in order to be able to better serve God .

Okinawan people form MOAIs: this is a commited social circle of persons who came together by sharing their money and support each other during hard times ( like the first Christians during the 1st century). So, moai appears as being a financial thing , but in reality it is a love movement. All old people are helped financially, physically and psychologically by the dedicated members of the moai movement . This happens as opposed to an outside world where people suffer from loneliness, isolation and lack of human interaction.
And this human interaction of okinawans alone, is a cause for a 15 years increase in their life span, because they have friends, serve their community and spend quality time every day.
All this is finally enveloped by IKIGAI which translates as waking up with having a sense of purpose in life and enjoying the present moment.
These people are reminded every day that they are important, make a difference in other peoples’ lives so they value themselves and and live purposely.

In south of Japan, most specifically Okinawa, there are a lot of centenarians( people living to or above 100 years).
These people eat a lot of purple sweet potatoes, that are full of antioxidants, and constitute of 70% of their diet.
They also eat a lot of Tofu, which decreases cholesterol and thus decreases the rate of heart diseases and may slow the progression of some cancers .
Seaweed is also a main constituent of their diet.
There is no single ingredient that is responsible for the long life of okinawans, they use medicinal foods and consume less than 2000 kcalories/ day but they all are nutritionally dense food.
Their trick is to stop eating when they are 80% full, and this is their key for having less obesity among their population.
Nobody eats alone in Okinawa, they always have either friends or family gatherings around the table.
Their houses have no real furniture except for low tables and a mat on the floor, so they exert squatting for at least 30 times/ day , that strengthens their balance , their core and reinforces their lower back.
They also practice ( without knowing ) , gentle low intensity physical activity even for those older than 100 years because they all have a garden that they take care of happily, with their own hands, for 1 to 2 hours per day, every day of their lives.So they daily strengthen the muscles of their upper body.
You would never hear of an elder okinawan, who fell, broke their bone, had a haemorrhage and died from complications of surgery as it occurs everywhere else , because elder people in Okinawa have toned and balanced bodies , in contrast to older population in the whole world,who don’t have enough muscle mass and balance due to lack of movement to support their body weight, so they fall and eventually die.

Today, I a m going to introduce the blue zones , that carry secrets to health and longevity. To understand this, we have to see which populations have lived long and healthy lives. And the most surprising is, that these people, live longer and healthier without even trying.
The term blue zones took place when an Italian researcher, Dr. Gianni Pes, discovered an area in Italy, most specifically in Sardinia, where people lived to more than 100 years.
Dr. Gianni used a map, and he marked the map with a blue dot every time he discovered an area with high percentages of centenarians. On one of these places, there were so many blue dots, that it formed like a thick blue spot on the map, and that is what gave birth to the name: Blue zone.

•Konjac decreases hunger hormone, known as Ghrelin
•It also inhibits absorption of proteins, fats and sugar
•It promotes growth of good bacteria in the gut ( lactobacillus)
•It decreases the spikes in blood glucose levels , so decreases insulin resistance
•It helps heal polycystic ovarian syndrome ( PCO) by the same mechanism described above
• Hyperthyroidism ( overactive thyroid gland), it helps decrease thyroid hormones quicker especially if added to the medicine
•Acne: if given with probiotics,it blocks the growth of acne-causing bacteria
• It decreases inflammation especially that due to arthritis ( inflammation of joints)

For the medical part, Konjac slows absorption of sugar and fat so it can be used to treat diabetes and hypercholeslesterolemia( high cholesterol) and of course to treat obesity.
Konjac can decrease absorption of medicines, especially when taken in capsule form, so to avoid this, take the capsules 2 hours after your regular medicines.

Have you ever heard about Konjac?
Konjac is a plant used by Asians as food and medicine.
For the food part, it is a soluble fiber (prebiotic), that absorbs water in the stomach, so it gives you a very strong sense of fullness and satiety and this is why it can be used for weight loss. It is available in the form of rice, noodles or capsules.
It is very low in calories, but if you are not used to getting daily dietary fibers, it may be harmful to your health.
