Asystematic approach to diagnosis involves monitoring the patient for anticipated toxic effects. Since anion gap acidosis occurs later, patients presenting with a normal acid-base status early after ingestion should be observed for at least 16 to 24 hours. Serial basic metabolic panels every 2 to 4 hours are recommended to detect the onset of metabolic acidosis and an elevated anion gap.
