MAIS Egypt

MAIS Egypt M.A.I.S. (Movement for self development, interchange and solidarity) works in Egypt since 2002 for promoting children’s and women’s rights. Since 2002, M.A.I.S.

works for promoting children’s and women’s rights in the Sohag Governorate, 500 Km from the capital city. During the years, M.A.I.S. has carried out support activities for women in the 11 districts of the Governorate, through micro-credit programmes, addressed to women who are head of the family / household and projects aimed at changing perception and behavioural models towards violence. In 2007, with the project ‘Support women’s rights: promoting behaviours against gender-based violence through the institutional strengthening of civil society organisations’, co-financed by the European Union, M.A.I.S. has undertaken a remarkable fight against traditional behaviours which are armful for women’s physical and psychological health, such as female genital mutilations and early marriage. Together with its local partner, WAHI (Women’s Association for Health Improvement), M.A.I.S. has started an awareness activity addressed to society and key social subjects, about gender-based violence, concentrating a great effort on the enforcement of Egyptian laws and of the international law regulating this issue. Domestic violence is a widespread problem in Egypt: according to a survey by the Demographic and Health Survey, in 2005, one third of women are subjected to physical abuse by their husbands. Particularly stigmatised are divorced women, for whom the probability of being abused is twice as high. In the rural areas, early marriages are happening every day: 70% of women between 5 and 21 years old get married by 18. The 2008 Demographic and health Survey reports that among women between 15 and 19 years old, the incidence of female genital mutilations has decreased from 96% in 2005 to 81% in 2008. Although Egypt ratified the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) in 1981, some reservations still exist, due to conflicts with the Islamic law. Since 2004, M.A.I.S. works in Cairo, in the most disadvantaged boroughs, in the suburbs and in the rural neighbourhoods. Together with ASSDA (the Association for the social development of the Abou el Seoud borough) M.A.I.S. has realized a professional education programme against school drop out, addressed to the boys working for tanneries in Old Cairo. It should be noticed that, at present, 27% of young Egyptians between 18 and 29 years old have not completed their basic education (17% of them dropped out of school, 10% never enrolled). Furthermore, 80% of the young who never enrolled in school live in rural areas and 82% of those are girls [1], thus highlighting the fact that this is a relevant gender issue in rural areas. The commitment of M.A.I.S. to the most disadvantaged categories is still strong in the Sohag district and in the suburbs of Cairo (Governorate of Helwan and 6th October), where the gain of rights goes together with thepromotion of active citizenship and with the fight for self-determination of women, young and children.

🌍✨ We are thrilled to announce that we have officially received the Quality Label as a Supporting Organization within the European Solidarity Corps!

This means we now have the opportunity to support young people aged 18 to 30 living in Egypt to take part in a volunteering experience in Europe. 🇪🇺

This is an incredible opportunity offered by the European Union to all youth from both shores of the Mediterranean — no matter your background, and even if you don't speak English, French, or the language of the host country.
The program covers travel, food, and accommodation costs, ensuring accessibility and inclusion.

For us, this is more than a program — it's a powerful tool to build the Mediterranean community we believe in: open, inclusive, and capable of growing stronger through diversity. 🌿🌊

With a strong commitment to reaching those who are too often left out of these opportunities, we warmly thank SALTO EuroMed for their trust.
We hope to live up to this responsibility and help shape a more united and compassionate region.

🎮 Today we’re excited to share a new methodology we’ve piloted in the context of our apprenticeship program — and whose impact we’ve truly appreciated.

In collaboration with our friends at Mortagal, we introduced as a tool not just for skill-building, but to foster social cohesion, encourage peer learning, and strengthen the confidence and agency of young people entering the job market.

This human-centered, experience-based approach helped create inclusive spaces where participants could reflect, connect, and grow — turning learning into a shared journey.

Thank you, Mortagal - مرتجل , for your creativity and commitment. Let’s keep building together!

We’re very happy to be part of this inspiring Study Visit on Capacity Building for Women in Youth Organisations! 🌿✨

This experience is giving us a valuable opportunity to grow and exchange knowledge on how to meaningfully engage women and girls from rural areas.

We’re also excited about the connections being made, the networking, and the seeds of new project ideas that are already emerging — all with the shared goal of improving the quality of the services we provide to the communities we serve.

Looking forward to the next days of learning, collaboration, and collective action! 💪🏽🤝
SALTO EuroMed thanks for this fruitful experience

Cospe Egypt

✨ Unlocking Potential — One Step at a Time! ✨

On Thursday, April 10th, 2025, we organized an extraordinary 🎭 Psychodrama evening to unlock human potential.

For the very first time, we introduced psychodrama to our Apprenticeship program, inviting young participants to step into different roles, express emotions, and explore how they see themselves — and how they connect with others.

But what does this have to do with finding a job?
🧠 Because self-awareness, empathy, communication, and the ability to navigate social situations are key skills in the world of work — especially for young people taking their first steps into the job market.

💬 By creating a safe space to explore thoughts, emotions, and group dynamics, participants gained powerful insights that can help them face interviews, work in teams, and build professional relationships with confidence.

We are proud to offer these innovative and impactful experiences — because preparing for the job market means knowing your strengths, understanding others, and believing in yourself.

Stay tuned — more exciting journeys are on the way!

🌙✨ Strengthening Youth Engagement in the Private Sector – Iftar with Mentors & Private Sector Representatives ✨🌙

On March 17th and 18th, we had the pleasure of hosting an Iftar gathering with 32 private sector representatives and mentors. Together, we explored how each of us can enhance youth engagement in the private sector through our respective roles.

A key focus of the discussion was the critical role of mentors in supporting young professionals.

We are grateful to all participants for their valuable insights and commitment to shaping a brighter future for young professionals! 🌟

Strengthening our partnership with the private sector is a top priority for our "Apprenticeship Program for Refugees and Host Communities in Damietta", implemented within the framework of Prospects ILO in partnership with
