The Emotion Code Healing Technique:

The Emotion Code was created by Dr. Bradley Nelson, a Holistic Chiropractic Physician. Hey everyone, let’s talk about the unspoken challenge in our field: therapist burnout. We’re so focused on caring for others that we often forget to care for ourselves. This isn’t just about self-preservation; it’s an ethical imperative. When we’re running on empty, our ability to be present, empathetic, and effective with clients suffers.
Here are a few things to remember:
* Boundaries are a form of self-care. That means setting firm limits on work hours, responding to emails, and even caseload size. It’s okay to say no.
* Supervision and consultation aren’t just for difficult cases. They’re a space for you to process your own feelings and challenges, preventing them from bleeding into your client work.
* Make time for what fills you up. Whether it’s hobbies, spending time in nature, or connecting with loved ones, these activities are essential for replenishing your energy.

Hey, fellow therapists! 👋

Let’s talk about something important: making mistakes in therapy. We all do it. The key is to learn from them and grow. Here are a few common pitfalls to be aware of:

1. Getting “Stuck” in the Narrative
Ever feel like you’re just listening to a client’s story over and over without any real forward movement? It’s a common trap. Your role isn’t just to be a passive listener, but to help them find new perspectives and solutions. Try gently redirecting the conversation to focus on emotions, bodily sensations, or the “here and now.”

2. Neglecting Your Own Countertransference
Our own experiences and emotions inevitably color our interactions. Are you getting frustrated with a client? Feeling overly protective? That could be countertransference. Recognize your own feelings and use them as data. It can tell you a lot about the client’s dynamics, but it’s crucial to separate your stuff from theirs.

3. Not Clarifying Confidentiality Properly
This is a big one. Clients need to know the limits of confidentiality from the very beginning. Don’t assume they understand. Clearly explain the exceptions (e.g., harm to self or others, child or elder abuse) in plain language. It builds trust and avoids serious ethical issues down the line.

4. Underestimating the Power of the Therapeutic Relationship
The single most important factor in therapeutic success is often the quality of the relationship. If you feel a disconnect, or if the client seems disengaged, it’s worth exploring that in the session. Ask them directly how they feel the therapy is going. Acknowledging a rupture can be the very thing that repairs it.

“Why are you so tired? You just talk all day.”
If you’re a therapist, you’ve heard it.

At parties.
Over dinner.
From friends, family, even strangers.

You’ve had people ask for “a quick chat” that turns into a full session.
You’ve been cornered at social gatherings for free advice.
You’ve been told, “You charge that much just to listen?”

They don’t see the tears you hold back.
The silence you sit in.
The emotional energy it takes to stay grounded, hour after hour.
They don’t know what it’s like to carry someone’s trauma in your nervous system, and still show up with compassion for the next client.
And the next.
And the next.

This job is not “just talking.”
It’s deep, sacred, invisible labor.

To every therapist who’s been made to feel small or dismissed,

With the loss of a certain person.
Or with the change of our whole life.

But this isn’t true.
The world is on, no matter what happened.
We adapt to whatever comes our way at the end. It never stops.
