He's gay, he's Palestinian, he's a talented artist, he's HIV positive, and he's trapped in Egypt, a country where LGBT people are subject to random arrest and mass imprisonment. As a gay "pos" man and as a Palestinian, he could not be more vulnerable. We can bring him to safety: there's an application in the works for him to go to Canada as a gay refugee. What we need is your financial support to raise the $14,000 Canadian dollars that is required of each refugee coming to Canada on a private sponsorship. The threat is real, and Mohammed has seen it first hand. In 2013, when he escaped to Cairo, the police arrested him arbitrarily and without charges. He spent a week in jail, where the filth, the abuse, both physical and verbal, brought him to the verge of a breakdown. When they let him out, the police said that if they found him “walking like a faggot” in downtown Cairo, they would arrest him again. In mid-October 2017, he was assaulted by four thugs at a barbershop, who objected to the earring he was wearing. They broke his nose and sent him to the hospital, where he required surgery.
