Very Comman question ! why I get some Post-treatment body aches or flu-like symptoms following an osteopathic session, commonly known as a "healing response" or "post-treatment reaction," occur for several reasons:
Tissue Release and Inflammation: Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) releases restrictions in muscles, fascia, and joints. This process can cause temporary inflammation as the body adjusts to the new alignment or tissue freedom, leading to soreness similar to post-exercise muscle pain.
Lymphatic Drainage: OMT often promotes lymphatic drainage, which can trigger the immune system's response. This activation may resemble flu-like symptoms such as mild fever, fatigue, or body aches.
Neurophysiological Reset: OMT can stimulate the nervous system, particularly the autonomic nervous system. This recalibration may cause temporary discomfort as the body balances between sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) states.
Emotional and Physical Release: OMT can sometimes trigger emotional releases stored in the body's fascial or musculoskeletal structures. These releases may manifest as physical symptoms, including body aches or fatigue.
Metabolic Toxins Release: Mobilizing tissues can release stored metabolic byproducts and toxins, which the body needs to process, potentially leading to temporary symptoms resembling detox reactions.
These symptoms are typically short-lived and resolve within a few days as the body adjusts to the changes made during the session.
