Every organ and tissue in the human body contains the mineral lithium, which is especially important for brain health. However, many people may be deficient in this essential nutrient, particularly if they live in areas where the lithium content in the drinking supply is low, or if they use a water filtration system that removes lithium.
🌟 In 2002, lithium was deemed “essential,” meaning that humans need to ingest it for health. It was suggested that the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) be 1 milligram per day for adults. The World Health Organization also recommends 1 mg per day.
🌟 Research supports that nutritional lithium has many benefits, particularly for mood improvement and brain health. It is even possible that nutritional lithium could be beneficial for other diseases, including fibromyalgia, Lyme disease, headaches, and glaucoma.
🌟 Note: Lithium is present in foods and supplements (nutritional lithium), and is also available as a prescription medication. When we talk about nutritional lithium, we’re referring to taking very small levels of lithium (orotate) in doses between 400 micrograms to 40 milligrams.
Nutritional lithium has certainly piqued my interest, and perhaps supplementation can be a way to achieve benefits for those that don’t have detectable levels of lithium in their drinking water! Check out my article to learn more: https://thyroidpharmacist.com/articles/lithium-and-hashimotos/
