Salt room FAQs

Q: Salt is bad for us right? Why are salt rooms good then? A: Humans cannot live without salt, but eating too much can upset the body in a myriad of ways. Primarily, it can increase blood pressure, which can lead to increased risk of heart attack for one. Eating salt is very different to breathing it in, or absorbing it through the skin. By eating it, your body must process the salt (and any by-products, eg: anti-caking agent) via the digestive tract (including the kidneys) and dispose of it this way. Too much of this does not make for a happy body. On the other hand, breathing in salt through your respiratory system, allows your body to decrease inflammation and rid itself of additional mucus. It also allows detoxification to take place. Absorbing it via the skin allows the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of salt really get to work. Helpful to anyone with an inflammatory skin conditions – eg: eczema or psoriasis. Q: Will it hurt? A: Generally not, though in certain cases, you may wish to ponder the old saying ‘to rub salt into the wound’. If you have cuts or abrasions on your skin, the salt will sting it to varying degrees. If you have a minor cut on a finger for instance, we can supply a natural balm to coat this for your session. If you have a more chronic condition such as psoriasis, the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of salt are something that will aid your condition, but do know that depending on its severity, it may sting a little. Is it safe? A: Salt therapy is a clinically proven and safe treatment. Our halogenerators constantly monitor and record the rooms levels including humidity, temperature & salt concentration. Our halogenerators were developed by Asthma & Allergy Ltd in the UK. Q: Are there any side effects? You may experience a clearing of excess mucus from your body during, immediately after, or in the days following your session. This is a positive sign that your body’s detoxification channels are working. It is a positive side effect. Can you overdose? Q: Will it increase my blood pressure? It will not affect your blood pressure as you are not eating it. Digesting salt through eating it is very different to inhaling it or absorbing it through the skin. The body uses completely different pathways for processing both of these. Won’t I catch other people’s colds or illnesses? A: Salt by its very nature is antibacterial. For this reason, salt rooms are highly sterile environments where you should not ‘catch’ anything. Salt has been used as a preservative for hundreds of years as it does not allow bacteria or other pathogens to flourish in its presence. Q: Is it safe for children and babies? A: Salt therapy is suitable for all age groups. Q: What should I wear? Something comfortable! There are no special requirements here. Wearing less clothing (e.g. shorts and singlet) will allow more of your skin to be exposed to the healing benefits of the salt therapy. The rooms are always heated to a comfortable temperature so you shouldn’t feel cold. For those that are cold, we can supply blankets. We advise anyone with skin problems to try and wear as little ‘product’ (e.g. make up, moisturiser, etc.) as possible to allow more exposure and absorption to enhance the healing benefit. We provide shoe covers and hair nets which must be worn throughout sessions. Q: How long are sessions? A: Sessions are generally 40 minutes long. Q: What should I expect during my session? A: During your session you should expect to feel relaxed! The more relaxed you are, the deeper your breaths will generally be resulting in more benefit to you. The abundance of negative ions in the room’s air aid relaxation naturally. What should I expect after my session? A: Different people will experience different things. The most common experiences include easier & deeper breathing, a clearing of the airways and an expulsion of additional mucus. This additional mucus may be immediately expelled, or in the days following your session. This is a positive effect allowing your body to detoxify naturally. How many sessions will I need? A: Different conditions and people will require a different number of sessions. The more chronic a condition has become, generally means more sessions may be required. An individual’s constitution will play a role as well. By constitution, we refer to a person’s ‘make up’ – whether they seem made of steel, or if they catch every bug going around, or somewhere in between etc. Your age and overall state of health will also affect the number of visits required as well. Most people seem to require a minimum of 8-10 sessions. I feel good, will salt rooms still help me? A: You do not need to be sick to visit our salt rooms. Athletes use our salt rooms to enhance their performance pre-race or event as it increases their lung capacity. The negative ions in the room’s air will also help to stimulate your serotonin levels, enhancing your feelings of wellbeing. Serotonin is your body’s natural feel good chemical. I’ve heard of salt pipes, why not just use that? A: Salt pipes may provide relief to certain conditions to a much more minor degree than the complete exposure within our salt rooms. Is it safe for children and babies? Salt therapy is suitable for all age groups. Is it good for stress? A: Absolutely! The negative ions in the air help to stimulate your body’s natural serotonin levels (your body’s ‘feel good’ hormone). The blissful and quiet environment also allows you to step away from your everyday grind leaving you with little else to do apart from breathing deeper and slower and generally slowing you down (especially your stress levels). What is a halogenerator? A: A halogenerator is the machine that crushes & pumps the salt into the rooms air. It constantly monitors humidity, temperature and salt concentration plus particle size within the room via a laser from within the room. Saltuary choose to use the BreezeTronic Pro, a halogenerator developed by Allergy and Asthma Ltd in the UK. It is the same halogenerator as used in the Royal Brompton Hospital in London.
