The Sharm-el-Sheikh Hyperbaric Medical Center specialises in diving related injuries such as Decompression Illness and Barotrauma. In the last five years, the recompression chamber in the center has been one of the busiest in the world and has treated in excess of 1,200 diving injuries. This rise in activity could be linked to the growing popularity of Sharm-el-Sheikh for diving holidays. The center receives students and diving medical physicians from all over the world. It also participates in much needed research. A new state-of-the-art new German made recompression chamber arrived at the center in February 2011, which has enhanced the its ability to treat injured divers and other non-diving related conditions. The center also offers diving eligibility medical examinations and care for those with E.N.T diving related complications; a service offered for those both travelling and living in the region. Additionally the center is actively involved in the care of the local population by conducting G.P. surgeries every day. There is also another Hyperbaric Medical Center in Dahab, 100 km North of Sharm-el-Sheikh. This center is run by the same group. The centers have good contacts with the local Search & Rescue.

Egypt / Diving chamber
The diving chamber is located directly in Sharm El-Sheikh. The experienced diving medical Dr. Adel Taher runs the pressure chamber near the Travco harbor since march 1993. He is a experienced diver and speaks fluent English and German.
For all divers in Egypt. It is very reassuring to know that there is a very well-organized rescue system. Even far out on the reefs, accident divers are taken by speedboats to the next pressure chamber.

Treated this week an interesting case of vestibulo-cochlear DCI (inner ear) following a series of technical diving.
The patient could not walk straight, suffered from some vertigo, had vomited and had difficulties focusing. The symptoms started about fifty minutes after surfacing. Normobaric oxygen and fluids were administered and he was brought to the Hyperbaric Medical Center. Following history taking and a full neurological examination he was admitted to the recompression chamber. Usually, such a presentation would need to take a USN TT6, lasting 4 hrs and 45 min.
We had treated several cases similar to that one with shorter modified HBO- sessions lasting 123 minutes. The improvement started to show after 20 minutes under pressure breathing hyperbaric oxygen at 2.8 Atm.
Follow up over the next two days showed full recovery. The patient was asked not to dive for six weeks and to return for a medical examination for diving eligibility prior to returning back under the water.
