Australian Mother Helps Deliver Her Own Twin Daughters in Rare C-Section
In a remarkable and empowering birth experience, a 41-year-old Australian mother helped deliver her own twin babies during a rare maternal-assisted caesarean section.
Gerri Wolfe was 36 weeks pregnant when unexpected complications meant she needed an emergency C-section. Wanting to remain actively involved in the birth, Wolfe asked her obstetrician for permission to assist in the delivery — a request that initially met hesitation but was ultimately approved.
Inside the operating theatre, as surgeons opened the incision, Wolfe reached forward and gently lifted her twin daughters, Matilda and Violet, into the world herself. The moment marked the arrival of her 10th and 11th children and transformed a surgical procedure into a deeply personal experience.
“It was important to me,” Wolfe explained. “It’s my body, my birth, and my babies. I wanted to be part of that moment.”
Both girls were born healthy and were soon home with their parents and nine siblings.
Maternal-assisted C-sections remain uncommon and are typically offered only under carefully controlled medical conditions. Wolfe’s experience has since drawn widespread attention, sparking conversations about autonomy, choice, and redefining what a “natural” birth can look like — even in an operating room.
For Wolfe, the outcome was simple and profound: she welcomed her daughters into the world with her own hands.
