Microbiota influences mood disorders 😞

At the Nutrigenomics Institute, we firmly believe in approaching health holistically: body, mind, and environment. The gut-brain axis , widely documented by the scientific community, reveals a two-way communication where the gut microbiota plays a central role.

A comprehensive review recently published in Cureus explores how microbiota influences mood disorders. The study highlights that certain gut bacteria—such as Bifidobacterium , Lactobacillus , and Escherichia —produce neurotransmitters (GABA, serotonin, dopamine, and other anti-inflammatory metabolites (SCFAs), affecting functions such as mood, anxiety management, sleep, and mental clarity ( PMC , Wikipedia ).

Why do people with higher body fat need more vitamin D?🤓

A team of researchers from Spain, Boston (USA), and Bubendorf (Switzerland) has delved into how adipocytes (fat cells) process vitamin D. The recently published findings reveal a key fact: vitamin D3 tends to remain trapped in fatty tissue.

Vitamin D, which we obtain through sun exposure or supplements, does not circulate freely throughout the body. Being a fat-soluble vitamin, it is stored primarily in body fat.

In the study, human adipocytes were cultured and administered both vitamin D3 (its original form) and its active metabolites (25(OH)D3 and 1,25(OH)2D3).

The result was clear: vitamin D3 accumulates in fat and remains there for several days. In contrast, the active forms quickly enter cells but are eliminated within a few hours. Furthermore, when lipolysis (the process of fat breakdown) was stimulated, adipocytes released vitamin D3 to the outside.

This suggests that it is possible to mobilize some of this stored vitamin, but only under certain conditions such as fasting, exercise, or in states of deficiency.

Can vitamin D help slow biological aging?

A new study suggests it can.

According to research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (May 2025), taking 2,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 daily may help slow the shortening of telomeres , DNA structures that are closely linked to aging and chronic diseases.

And why is this important for our health?

Because telomeres act like a “biological clock” in our cells .

🧐Stroke, dementia and depression are more common in people with short telomeres.

Leading a healthy lifestyle reduces this risk.

Telomeres, the gene-protecting structures located at the ends of chromosomes considered a biological marker of aging, could determine our risk of stroke, dementia, and depression in old age.

A study published in the scientific journal ‘ Neurology ‘ has found that people with short leukocyte telomere length are more likely to suffer from these diseases as they age.

However, the most encouraging finding is that this risk is not seen in those who lead a healthy lifestyle.

Bariatric surgery shows better results than GLP-1 in a real-life study: the scalpel achieves five times more weight loss than drug treatment after two years.

After two years, bariatric surgery achieves five times greater weight loss than GLP-1 receptor agonists. This is the main conclusion of a real-life study just presented at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) meeting in Washington.

The study, led by NYU Langone Health in New York , compared the results obtained with sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass versus injections with semaglutide or tirzepatide .
